I need to get a new radiator. My stock SE one will not (I'm assuming) cool the SVT engine properly. I have had quotes from Bill J on an SVT Radiator but what about racing rads from Summit? They have aluminum ones for about $169 which isn't bad at all. Does anyone know the dimensions of our stock rad's (height,width,depth,length). Should I just stick with the SVT OEM rad or are these summit racing rads better?

SVT has 44mm deep fins (from European Mondeo), and a redesigned front fascia that allows more air in for better cooling (50% larger opening), and a pair of 25 inch "euro" cooling fans. Stock (non SVT) has dinky 28mm fins on the radiator...can't help you out with the demensions though, just measure your current one, i guesss.

I believe the SVT was something like 24 3/8 x 15 5/8 x 1 1\4. I know everything is right except for the 1" width, but you can check this one easy.

My stock v6 radiator with stock fans cools the svt engine just fine here in sunny 112 degree desert weather. The gauge has yet to get above the "m" in normal. And that is even counting when I really abuse the car.

See that's something I have noticed. Not one person (that I know of) who has done an SVT engine swap has replaced the radiaor with the SVT one! And seem to run fine. But then why did SVT make the radiator larger for the SVT car?? One would think that it is needed for proper cooling. Well, for now I think I'll just go ahead and use my stock one and get the SVT one at a later date. Only reason being money is totaly GONE!
Hey dwh...I have noticed that on SVT engines there is a pipe coming from the BACK of the coolant tank. I am assuming that yours did not have this as mine does not either being a NON-SVT. Did you do anything about that? Thanks.

A comment on cooling capacity. The non SVT radiator may be fine for many, but the larger radiator wiil most definitely provide more reserve. It is good to know that the standard radiator is more than adequate, but bigger is usually better.
The overflow drain on the coolant bottle became standard sometime in mid 98. It also uses a different coolant bottle cap. My car seems to work fine without it.

But then why did SVT make the radiator larger for the SVT car?? Well, here is a thought. THE SVT also has a "doughnut" water to oil cooler. So the SVT radiator is essentially cooling both coolant and oil, the stock rad is cooling only coolant. Perhaps the stock rad is still doing OK on the coolant but remember the oil does 50% of the cooling in the Duratec. So, whats your oil temp??? You may have heard Terry talk about oil temps.. And do you really believe that water temp gauge is even accurate? Just food for thought/disscusion.

Without a high state of tune an SVT can run oil temps in excess of 250 deg F and has been known to 'nail the gage' at oil temps above 300 deg F.The 'plate' cooler does not have the capacity or the cooling surface area of an air/oil cooler.At the very least you should fit an oil temp gage and take it from there....oil picks up more heat from the engine due to the large internal surface areas of a DOHC motor.....
