I bought a 4 inch VDO tach to put in my '96 contour gl. I can't seem to find where to put the green wire (supposed to connect to tach output).

Welcome to the CEG! I installed an aftermarket in my '97 GL, and I wrote a how-to for it. You can find it here.

I hope it helps. Let me know if you have more questions, and I'll do my best to answer them. Good luck!

Good HowTo!! The wire on most 98 and up cars is white/black (white wire with a black stripe) located behind the gauges.

Good luck.

So would this not work with the SVT gauge cluster with the original tach? Or would it?

Thanks for the compliment John!

Sleepie - bear in mind that I have not tried this, so it's just speculation. But I don't see why it wouldn't work . . . if you have a 6 cyl. As you may or may not know, aftermarket tachs are adjustable for how many cylinders the car has, usually 4, 6, and 8. But the SVT tach would not be adjustable. I hear there is a resistor that you can put on the SVT/6 cyl tach to make it work with the Zetec. What the Ohm value of it is, I don't know. A search would probably turn it up.

On the green wiring harness there are no white w/ black stripe wires coming out of it. There is one of those wires coming out of a white harness next to the green one?

If you can't find it down below, you may be able to find it behind the instrument cluster. That's where the wire is going eventually (I'm looking at Hayne's wiring diagrams now).

As far as I can tell, that white/black wire originates from the "Electronic Control Unit," which I would take to be the computer. That's located in front of the firewall on the passenger side, but you can't get to any wires from inside (I believe me, I tried. And I managed to wring the computer's bolt off too, which called for replacing the bolt by hand shocked ). So, you may be able to get to the wire on the engine side of the firewall.

Unfortunatly, the wiring diagrams don't show the harness that the wire comes through to get through the firewall. I suppose that is possible that the color of the wire changes once it enters the inside of the car. I know that the speaker wires are not the same throughout, at least on my car. So you could try other wires coming out of that green harness but you do that at your own risk! Sorry, but I had to put that. wink
