Horse,
Pardon my presumptuousness, but I believe it will be a wee bit difficult, if not downright impossible, to acquire an original Ford GT J-car as there were never any built after the Riverside testing crash of the prototype driven by Ken Miles that claimed his life.
Due to the inherent aerodynamic instability of the design which may have contributed to Mile's fatal crash, the J-car program was immediately canceled & none ever raced competitively. The Mark IV was a development of the J-car but as far as I know the latter never turned a wheel in anger.

I'll gladly stand corrected if I am wrong about this statement.

I belive Horse's statement that they may have a J car, because this is Car # MKIV J-6. I saw it with my own eyes at SAAC convention. The particular one that Ken Miles was killed in ( I belive Aug of 66) was a very early MKIV J-car. Some of the later MkIVs were still under the "j-car" designation into mid to late 1967 I belive. ( I could be wrong, but I pretty sure)

Has correct trigo halibrands- but those were used only on a few cars

Trigos were never original wheels on Cobras or GT-40s. This is a newer company that produces replicas of Halibrand Magnesium wheels and is owned by one of the largest Cobra collectors in the world, Lynn Parks.

Well Im probably the biggest GT-40 Fan anywhere. I prefer the MKI, II, and 3s. I think the later are not as pretty. I also prefer the 289 as opposed to the 427. I have rode in original MKII Ford team car at Willow Springs. Oh my god!!!. If I ever had the money I would buy one of Lee Holmans sons repro GTs.

well when I said trigos- obviously I ment the repro ones- the originals as stated were halibrands- and they were not used for very long on eithr gt-40 or Cobra- the supplies just dried up and that is why Pete Brock designed the sunburst wheels for the 427 Cobra cars. The Early 289 Cobras had Mag FIA style. the original GT-40's race and road had borrani Wire wheels. They switched after too many failures and the torque wall of the 427.
I envy you for your ride in the MKII I have only just sat in 1009. We do NOT have a J-car. We would be obtaining a MKIV in the future if we can negociate for it. The J-car program was not terminally cancelled after the Miles crash- but I believe three J-cars were built. J-3 was rebuilt to MKIV specs- J-4 was the first built as the first KMIV- J-5-8 as MKIV and J-9&10 were Can Am variants of the MKIV J-11-12 were built up of spare chassis in the 1980's.
J-3 and J-6 are actually used on the street- and are complete street spec.
the other Variant of the GT-40 was the Mirage- built by John Wyer. three were completed M10001-10003 and M10003 was rebuilt as a GT-40PM10002 was wrecked and destroyed.

Well, now we're down to splitting the proverbial pubic hairs over what is or is not defined as a "J-car."

Though the chassis may have still retained some form of "J" designation in their serial numbers, none of them, to my knowledge, was ever officially referred to as a "J-car" because all subsequent versions after Mile's crash became Mark IV's.

As I originally stated, no "J-car" was ever raced. This designation was merely to signify the car conformed to a subsection of the FIA rule book.

you are correct in the J- being for a section of the rule book of the FIA but J-3 was raced. (it was raced in its MKIV form) I agree with you on that one- the raced J-cars were actually never raced AS J-cars.
J-3 qualified for Daytona in 1967 but apparently did not start.
J-1 participated heavily in the LeMans test week end in April of 1966.

What do you all think of the Mirage GT-40 Variant??

dont like....I also dont like the MK IV that I pictured...

Just had to put this awesome pic up. This is the 1966 Le Mans that Ford finished 1,2,3. In the foreground No.3 was driven by Gurney/Grant. Wow!!!

Oh, and this bad ass pic of a Ford/Gulf car in the 65 Le mans.... so frickin rad. I must have at least 150, framed posters, metal models, books and pics of GT-40s...
