I can get a great deal on a 99 cougar 5 speed, but it needs a new transmission (no reverse). Anyone had theirs changed ?, how much ? new or used ? whats involved (labour hours). Only good thing about this is that I can throw in a lighter flywheel and a new clutch. Anything else I schould know. My friend (a mechanic) would be changing it.

You can score the tranny for $400 -$600. The bad part is that it takes about that much to drop the old one and put in the new one. You will probably pay $1200 or more, total. Is it worth it? YOu be the judge. YOu might as well do the clutch/T O bearing when you are in there.

Well, if you are wanting to know the labor hours including clutch change, it is over 9 according to ford, for a contique. The cougar is probably very similiar. A grizzly clutch is in the $300 range, but a stronger one could be double that. Aluminum flywheels are anywhere from $300-$600. You could look in the classified here. There were some advertised recently. Bottom line: If you have to pull the transmission anyway, try to get everything else related done that you want/need to at the same time. The job is too expensive/time consuming to be a casual project IMO.

Edit: The information above is based on cars with a 2.5L. I have no experience with the zetec.

One more thing, while shopping for a tranny, they wanted to know the production date of the car, thus there are 2 different trannys for the car. I thought the transmission was the same for all contiques (its a 2.5L BTW). If its different what's the difference between them.
