Guys, I got the cable modem hooked up at my house. I have a laptop with a Ethernet port on board and ever since I got Xp installed over Me it doesnt work. Oh well, I got a Wireless router throught the pcma slot (I think thats what it is. Welp that doesnt work at all. When I slide it in it shows that is is getting great signal and shows packets and everything being sent. All is good then I go to Internet Explorer to surf the web and nothing. It says detecting proxy settings then nothing happens. I have things set on automatic and it still doesnt work. AIM and Mail clients dont work either. But it says I am connected?!?!?

Why!
Thanks

Not sure on XP, but sometimes I have to go
into the start menu under RUN and type winipcfg
that will bring up the IP config utility.

Just reset and renew.
You say the cable modem is showing all good?
All lights are on and it is sending/receiving info?

Hope that helps!

Yeah all the lights are working and the signal is great. I will try that in the run section when I get home.
Thanks for your help.

The weird thing is, is that i was playing around with it and it worked for like 5 min and it was real fast then it stopped working!

If you upgraded over ME to XP, that is your problem... What you need to do is wipe your system clean and install XP as a new install. Only way you will cure all your problems.

On a similar note, I just got a cable modem myself and am using XP. XP used to shut down very quickly, before I could turn off the monitor it would be down.. But ever since installing the modem, it shuts down very, very slowly..

Any ideas.

I manage a call center that supports 1.1 million cable modem users, so maybe I can help.. smile

Did you install the firewall that comes with XP? If so, it may be blocking access to your DHCP or DNS server. Also, depending on who you have for your service, you may not want to have the proxy settings enabled in IE.

Are you sure your wireless router is configured correctly, and that the appropriate drivers for the PCMCIA card (for XP) are installed and working?

Try these first, and make sure that you're getting a valid IP in winipcfg, and go from there. Your cable company and router vendor should be able to help if you're still stuck.
