I'm replacing the windows on this porch:

I've looked at:

casement windows (too expensive - would need 7)

Awning windows (" " 14)

double and single hung (not enough air flow)

Large sliding windows (4'x6') seem to be the best choice. I can get 4 of them for $192 each. With a single hung by the door I'm looking at ~$700 for windows after tax, friends helping me install. For the awning or casement I'm looking at ~$1400 for windows. Here is what a guy had to say about large sliders for my application:

"Those sliders will only allow a 50% opening........AWNING windows offer a much greater opening.......(maybe you wouldn't use one at the door)........Also that BIG piece of glass makes a BIG design statement on your 1941 house........

ALSO When that slider is in the 'SunShine'......it delivers a blast of radiant heat right into the room..........You can feel the 'magnifying glass' effect ........"

The house is covered in vinyl siding so the whole authentic 1941 house is kinda out the window. I figured it doesn't make any bigger of a design statement than big casements...Any advice?

Aight...
Seeing that you are from the north, the guys around my shop recommend that you go with the sliders. Think of it this way.
  • It's cheaper
  • It's easier to install
  • even if it DOES magnify, you will love it half the year, and can open the screen during the warm half, too..

Or.. you could just move to FL, where you could leave the damn things screened, and that would be that...

Thanks Ray, actually the guy that posted that is from Florida and that would explain his concerns.

Also, what would you recommend for replacements on this beast of a garage, there are only 5 windows:

Right side, one pane in garage door:

I'm buying the house. I don't get possesion until August 26th. I cannot paint a house I do not own, which is why I'm asking about replacing windows prior to putting vinyl siding on (instead of painting).

If you get decent sliders you wont get the "magnifying effect". We have sliders in the kitchen that face the sun until about 1:30 everyday and do not get alot of heat radiated through them, just be sure when you get sliders they have "Low E" glass, that is a special coating the reflects light out in the summer, but lets it pass through in the winter to help warm the house. We had old sliders on our other house and there's night and day difference with the low e glass.

The sliders with E glass are only 15 bucks more per window, I was thinking of that.

Now to figure out which buddy from work to bribe into helping me install (bribe = beer + steaks smile )
