Ok I got a Belkin router and hooked it up like im supposed to.Everything went fine, both connections work and can get on the net.But my connection speed,or time it takes to load a page is super slow.I meen Dial up slow some times. I dont have the second computer hooked up permanently yet,I just plugged my lap top up to the second line to see if it was working. Why would this slow me down so much,I was told, that there would be no noticeable difference. Here is another problem. When I tried to put everything back the way it was,my main pc wont connect(this is with the router removed, and the line plugged straight into my pc from the modem). I tried reseting the modem and restarting the computer doesnt work either. So now Im stuck with a really slow Cable connection. HELP ME!!!!!!

If I have the router connected, like I do now, it takes a complete restart for MSIE to see the internet again after the router is disconencted. Does your router have any lights on it telling you what speed the computers are attached at? My Linksys has some, and I know that this computer has the slowest connection in the house. Its still cable speed though. Other then that, I can't help much more. I am not good with routers.

Did you fix your virus problem? That would slow your connection down. Scan your machine for viruses just to be sure.
MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING THE LATEST VIRUS UPDATE LIST!
Try that first. Then let us know.

Two questions: One: Do you use PPPoE to connect with your cable modem, or is it a static IP? If it's PPPoE you have to change what's called your MTU setting to 1492. Standard MTU setting is 1500 (bytes), but with PPPoE, it has what's called a "header" that's 8 bytes. This can cause slower speeds, and you'll definitely see this on large downloads. Two: Did you do any patches yet? If not, go to www.speedguide.com and download their speed patches if you're running Windows. Any questions/problems, let me know or PM me!

Cable also can slow to less than 56k during peak hours. Have you tried using it in the middle of the night!

Even more important than the MTU that Rynn mention, is your Tcp Recieve Window. Windows comes otimized for dialup, but with broadband, this really limits you. Go to www.dslreports.com and download Dr. Tcp. It's the easiest way to change the values (otherwise it's into the registry). Also, they have good speed tests there to show before/after speeds. As far as the value you should use for the RcvWin, it depends on the speed of the line. I use 32767 for my DSL connection, and odds are that would work fine for you too. Most importantly though, run the tweak test a DSLreports ( http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks ), and it'll suggest things you can do to help the connection. Hope this helps!

W00t for Kai l33t like me LOL j/k Kai's suggestions are great too, I used the patches on www.speedguide.net tho. If you want to edit your MTU, then Dr. TCP is great as well

Try that first. Then let us know. I never had a virus, just someone trying to get me to open an email with one.
