I really don't see how an asteroid big enough to cause this kind of damage could be deflected/destroyed.

The chances of that asteroid actually coming in contact with the earth is small. They're probably guessing though it will come in range around a few million miles or so. Millions of miles is actually pretty close.. but they just put that up for an alert incase something may happen.
