In the Line of Fire

The Ford Crown Victoria is the nation's most popular police car. Eighty-five percent of all patrol cars in the United States are Ford's police interceptor cruisers. Yet in the last six years, gas tank explosions due to rear-end collisions in police car fires have killed nearly a dozen police officers.

Often, the officers were not seriously hurt but died because they were trapped inside the car, unable to escape the fireball following the crash. Correspondent Susan Candiotti examines whether U.S. police officers face an extra risk every time they get inside their patrol car in the CNN Presents documentary, "In the Line of Fire."

nice....

I read that story this morning. Its kind of a joke!
What car wouldn't catch fire after being rear-ended by a car going 100 mph? or 83 mph? All of the cases seemed to relate incidents where the Vicky was hit by cars travelling at a very high rate of speed.

I saw that piece on CNN over the weekend. Tragic what happened to the people involved...but I thought it was preposterous to put the burden or fixing the issue on the backs of the auto manufacturers. They were talking about requiring auto manufacturers to design their cars so that at least one door would be guaranteed to open in a high speed (I don't remember exactly how fast, but I think it was over 60mph!) rear impact. Does anyone know how much it would cost for R&D alone?

We're talking about a small percentage of all accidents and a smaller percentage where the door doesn't open and an even smaller percentage where the fuel tank is ruptured.

How 'bout improving Emergency Services ability to remove a victim from an automobile? Better cutting tools...
How 'bout training Police Officers (who this seems, from the report, to happen to fairly frequently) on how to bust out a window and climb out?
How 'bout designing the front windshield to detach in a rear impact crash in excess of a certain mph?

All those options would be a lot easier to do than redesign every new car in the country...and just as effective.

Just my $.02

The problem with the PI version of the CV is that it has a bolt on the axle that perforates the gas tank upon rear impact (the civilian version does not have this bolt), leaking fuel and resulting in the fatal fires. All Ford has to do is redesign one bolt (make it a rivet). I don't have a problem requiring Ford to do this if it will save even one life, police officer or otherwise.
