From what I've heard the reliability of the Mitsibishi Eclipse is questionable...also, every once in a while I see one blowing blue smoke, just like the Chrysler minivans that use a Mitsubishi engine (any correlation??)

Nissan Sentra 91+ (preferably an SE-R w/the 5th gear fix already done)
A2 VW's are a mixed bag. Easy to work on, easy to get parts for, easy to make into a sporty, fast car BUT it's not easy to find a good one. Most will need some work to make them run tip-top. But with just a bit of TLC they can go forever.
Toyota FX16's were a fun, small car with a great engine that was also in some Corolla GT-S's as well. Toyota reliablity is legendary for a reason...

Well...$4500? My '95 Duratec LX cost me $3600. I got an SVT exhaust and E1 rims w/ KDWs for $500, dropped about $150 under the hood (K&N, Bosch 4s, Ford Racing plug wires, steel waterpump), and am gonna get about $300-$400 in brake work done (BAT Big Brake C & stainless steel hoses), so that levels out at about $4500. The car was owned and maintained by adults who didn't race or do anything stupid to it, so the engine and tranny are still in fine shape. And with the help of my local CEG guys, all the labor into the car has been near-free. Who knows, maybe I'm lucky and got a better deal than you find on V6 Contours, but it's not like it can't be done.

Well today we looked at a 91 Cabriolet and it was junk (80k miles). Tomorrow we are looking at a 1990 or 1991 (I forget) Integra with 103k.
She is more willing on the car now after the humbling experience from the Cabriolet. She is also thinking of an early 90's Accord with somewhere in the 100-130k mile range. I will keep you all updated. Thanks for the help.

Accrording to the classifieds in my lap $1500 can get you a 91 celica with 106k, hell there is a 93 saab 900s convertible for $6500, and considering this is NYC metro I would thing our stuff is more $$$ here -Pete

Maybe she should consider a probe/mx-6 or a mercury capri (the FWD one). I dunno about the reliability of the capri (but being a little convertible, with an available turbo she should like it), but the probe does fairly well.
