Can someone tell me what that little black tank is, that is connected to the 3/4" hose where we fix the throttle hang at? It is about the size of a small orange juice can! What is it for and do we need it? Can we just run a straight hose in place of it?

I think you're referring to the intake resonator. It serves a variety of roles, including noise reduction. Ford replaced it with a straight hose in later years.

order the Mr.Moose fix from Bill Jenkins when he sets up shop. It's about $60 and replaces that tank resonator with a straight hose and replaces the IAC to fix the moosing problem. Then you don't need to clog the IAC with that pipe cap
