Pederpes Finneyae One of the earliest land walking vertebrates has been found in the fossil record. Part of the family of Tetrapods (large salamander-like amphibians), it lived some 350 million years ago. This organism truly serves as a demarcation between aquatic and terrestrial tetrapods and may be a direct ancestor of all land-dwelling vertebrates including us.

If there were no seals today and they found fossilized seal bones, they would say the same thing... But we know what a seal is, don't we?
