Since EdwardC hasn't piped up yet (or if he did I missed it), next Monday NASA is scheduled to launch its COmet Nucleus TOUR (CONTOUR for short) spacecraft to study Comet Encke in 2003 and Comet Schwassmann-Wachmann3 in 2006. Hope they put in water pumps with metal impellers! (The spacecraft was not built by Ford Aerospace, but by Johns Hopkins' Applied Physics Lab.) There's even a website with the enticing name www.contour2002.org

Good eye gwellington,
I knew about it but the Comet Nucleus TOUR mission had been brought up before here. Fascinating prospects are afoot in that we may be better able to ascertain the chemical composition of the comet's coma.

When I saw CONTOUR the other day on the launch board/ new satellite stuff I smiled and pointed it out. Most people I work with know I drive a Contour, so they ignored me at first then proceeded with the normal grandma car/wannabe sports car/ Ford crap. I then retreated to my hole(the Space Analysis Center inside Cheyenne Mountain((NORAD)) and fixed all the crap they screw up. I felt better about myself since I'm a lowly E-4 and they are all officers. Mike

n2_space and anyone else who cares. Currently the vehicle is in an orbit that has an Apogee(furthest point in its orbit) of 106,687km, perigee(closest point to the Earth in it's orbit) of 215 km and a period(the time it takes to make one revolution or orbit around the Earth) of ~430 minutes. This information is what is current in the Space Catalogue
