Or you could look at it another way, which is once a species begins an obvious cultural decline and no longer has anything to offer to the universe, fate/god/the universal will/whatever exterminates the species and hopes for better luck next time.

I think you are right. "near" has a few meanings:

1 : at, within, or to a short distance or time
2 : ALMOST, NEARLY
3 : in a close or intimate manner : CLOSELY
4 archaic : in a frugal manner

I think when people say "a near miss" they mean "a close miss". (Having little space between.)

NOT: "a almost miss".

You are way off. There are some in the media that understand the importance of beginning a real program to track bodies that are on an Earth collision course, and to formulate ways to deal with this.

The latest body was only the size of a football field. It would cause massive loss of life in a populated area, but not the end of the human race. More like a random nuke hit.

This is NOT hype. Better tracking would allow plans for preparedness. Given a month notice, we can damn near estimate the point of impact and evacuate that area. Given no or little notice, people are screwed if it is headed for them.

I do agree that an object big enough to cause extiction cannot be deflected with current technology.
