That's the best way to put it... We all here are car lovers and we have faced many times people trying to understand our passion for cars...

I read again you post Cisco.... and I think ( I hope) you not really "attacking" people that love soccer but really trying to point that It occurs to me that if we devoted even a tenth as much of our time and attention to, oh, say, something that actually mattered, the world could be a much better place. .

In that case... I believe you forgot to mention ALL the things that disctract us from focusing on making the world a better place. Not only few soccer games. And if that IS the case... I have to agree with you... that SHOULD be the way to live... but unfortunately it is NOT.

Wasn't attacking anyone, just frustrated at hearing of the World Cup everywhere.

Sorry for popping the fuse.

I imagine these people also arrogantly twist slices of lemon over salmon steaks while discussing the state of modern high art.

At any rate, it disgusts me how obnoxiously enthusiastic people get over things like this. Look, I'm all for getting excited about things, but come on. It's a damn game. A bunch of people chase a ball around (this is somehow much more refined and elegant than, say, American football, though nobody can provide a coherent reason why). And everyone bickers and argues and struts around while watching the games and comparing scores of this country versus that country, as though the spectators had anything to do with it, any personal responsibility or investment for the wins and defeats.

And when it's all said and done, what are we left with, really?
One country gets to say "We chased the ball around better than anybody!"

..woo-hoo? You wanna talk anti-climatic? There you go, kids. Full of sound and fury, but signifying nothing.

It occurs to me that if we devoted even a tenth as much of our time and attention to, oh, say, something that actually mattered, the world could be a much better place.

Look, enjoy the sport, cheer your team on, do whatever. Have fun with it. Be entertained. I'm not saying it's a bad thing - not at all. All I'm sayin' is, it's just a damn game, people. Keep that in mind.
You hypercritical a-hole! mad I bet you wouldn't say the same thing about Basketball or Baseball or "American" football now would you?? Oh, and why? just because football(soccer) is not an American pastime???? You have NO idea of what your talking about, the only ignorant and obnoxious people, are people like YOU!

Dipstick is the oil measuring device, long metal stick, dips into the oil pan, you can pull it out to see how much oil you have in your car, hence "dip-stick".

laugh

I'm going to go with England in the first game. They seem to have the swagger this time around. Don't get me wrong, I think Brazil is awesome, but England is pissed about '98 and it will show in this game.
PREDICTION: Beckham on a Golden Goal free kick from 30 yards out.

The second game is a tough one. After the first round, I picked Germany to win it all. They seem to be hitting on all cylinders. But I can't root against the Americans. I will be sad if the U.S. loses, but not as sad as if it were against Mexico.
PREDICITON: U.S. takes a first-half 2-0 lead. Germany scores early in the second half and the U.S. holds on to win.

I don't know much about soccer (heh, football is played with an oblong ball to this American), just folowing the US team since they beat Portugal - even I knew that meant they could do something this time around. So this post is just an outsider's take on the game from what he's heard.

The ESPN coverage I saw mentioned Germany's only real weakness is their middle defense; also happens to be an area the US can exploit. The US will have to play tough D again, just like against Mexico. US isn't going to win the possession game. Their only chance is to take advantage of their opportunities and get back on D.

Germany's big advantage is their physical size, but the US seemed to take well to the physical play against Mexico - so that might not be as big of an advantage as Germany is used to. The US has decent midfield speed; they say they plan to try to win the game on the ground with that speed.

US must score first - no way they can come from behind. None. The Poland game explosed that.

I'm not going to get to watch the game - going to the drag strip at 8 AM. If it isn't 1-0 US by then, I doubt a US win is in the cards. Wonder if I can get a World Cup score at the track?
