So far the HP 9600SE 12x8x32 and the Sony iLink 12x8x32 seem to be the best finds on eBay. Any other suggestions I should consider?

Never ever buy HP, they are soldiers of the devil (at least that's what they became when I was downsized)!

I've got an HP internal drive, and I've NEVER had a problem with it. It's been working for a good 3 years now..going on 4, can't go wrong with HP in my book. They're basically sony drives anyway.

The problem I do have is the external thing. Why? You just get slower burn speeds working through the USB port. For half the price you can get an internal that's twice as fast. Are you afraid to open the computer?

External drives aren't so bad...you can use them on multiple machines, and they all aren't necessarily that slow...i think 24x is out ?? and now with USB and firewire its not too bad. I have a 4x4x20 Backpack External parallel port CDRW drive that works outstandingly...never had one problem ever for 3 years now. I have used it with my desktop and two different laptops without any flaws.

Although, if you are looking to use this cdrw drive on 1 machine...I would get an internal...save money and more speed.

At our office we have a LACIE 24x fire wire burner. We have had 0 problems to date. I think we have had it for 15+/- months now, and have used it for archiving our images files.

Do any of the machines have usb2 or firewire ports?

If you don't know, USB2 is fairly new and virtually no machines have support for it without an add-on card

Get USB2 over Firewire. USB 1.0 sucks for anything but scanners, printers, and webcams.

480Mb/s xfer rate. Get a dedicated 5 port USB2 card. Then, get a nice USB 2.0 drive.

USB 2 is nice all right but that's a bit of monkeying around to retrofit the computer. The good USB 1.0 CDRWs work just fine. Take a look at the Iomega Predator.

Sleeper, you will be happy to hear that HP is taking big hits from their merger with Compaq, our company has ditched them to go with IBM and I am sure other companies will follow as well. HP may be the devil, but I like their printers wink .
