Which would be the 1993 - 1999 model. I may be on the market to purchase one probably a 96-98 model. I would really like to know how do they compare to the Contour SVT. If Im not mistaking, they do have around 170ish HP but they are really light...even lighter than the present GTI's. Also, how much HP can you get out of them with just the usual bolt ons? And I know they have a pretty good aftermarket for parts so thats good.

Can anyone give me some insight?

Thanks

I think it's a drivers race if you had the two cars side by side. Lots of aftermarket parts...I think a chip can net you ~30hp and torque to match. Nice cars.

Avenel NJ? I've seen a black SVT driving around there, it was driven by what looked like a blonde lady though? You?

I think 30 horse w ith a chip in a smaller displacement NA engine is complete BS. Go with the turbo 4 cyl GTI, it has a better weight distribution for cornering, and the boltons will get you easily over 200 horse (probably closer to 230).

No VR6 before the 95' model year. With chip, cams (256 or 260), intake, exhaust, they are in the mid 170's in both HP and TQ. They are in the low 160's to start. While that does not sound like big gains, area under the curve is much bigger.
Lots and lots of mods for them. A 2.0 w/turbo is good as well, alot lighter as well. For more info than you can sift thru go to www.vwvortex.com and look in the MkIII forums and 12v VR6 forums for info. HTH

Not a bad choice. The A3's are the best looking VW's IMHO.

You can coax a lot of power out of the VR6.

Nope...wasnt me...unless some chick stole my car, haha.

1.8T, I wouldnt be able to afford right now, thats why Im going with an older VR6. I actually had a deposit on the GTI 337 but the payments came out too high and insurance was over $3000 a year under my parents. And the fact that Im planning on going back to school sometime soon Id rather get a used car.

I hope you can squeeze more HP out of the VR6 than the tours 2.5. But 30 horse on a non turboed VR6 would be nice...but I doubt it.

Id rather ask you guys/gals cause I love this site and I know I'll get more "honest" replies...rather than start a flame war. But I am familiar with VWVortex.com, thanks.

Just don't buy a 2.0 and not mod it majorly. A kid I know thinks his is hot $hit, needless to say many people have proved him wrong.

IIRC, the GTI of that era handles better than a new one stock, from what I have heard anyway :p

TDI's routinely spank 2.slow Jettas and Golfs. They don't realize that the TDI is nothing like the old diesel Rabbit! laugh

I remember those diesel rabbits. I had an '81 with 300K+ on it. Nearly indistructible, but acceleration was measured accurately with a calendar.

This is a real good article to read about VR6 tuning. Very in depth.
