I think the "8-Track" format should be considered as well, since it's "data aquisition interface" are far more rare.

We actually get a lot of 8-track-looking tapes as computer data for payrolls.

BTW, there were various reel sizes: 3 1/2 inch, 5 inch, 7 inch (what I mainly use)...and a larger "professional" size. You get pretty good sonic quality from a reel-to-reel at 7 1/2 inches per second tape speed (cassettes, by contrast, move at only 1 7/8 inches per second, thus requiring Dolby, chrome tape, and either serious deafness or serious delusion (or a serious substance abuse problem) on the part of the owners to make them feel that cassettes sound good).

They've had it as long as I remember. It's as least as old as I am maybe even older.

Usually those are only used for backing up files, or for permanent easy-to-record storage (as opposed to CD-RW, the only viable alternative for removable/transportable storage).

Seems tapes are still alive and well in the financial/payroll world.
We just installed some Sun 4800 systems for a customer and they added 9 track drives (computer reel to reel, you saw them all the time in old movies with computers) to read tape they would get from clients with mainframes.
