Sandman, just thought you would get a kick out of those figures. That's a lot of work! The best part of this story is when their mayor appeared on our state-wide radio talk show, TalkLine (it is very popular and quite influential in politics). The mayor said they only pull over people for at least 15 mph over, and the city would reimbuse the fines for anyone ticketed for less. Well, the phones lit up!! The next hour was nothing but people ready to fax over their tickets for less mph, some for 2 OVER. They wanted their money back!!! Never heard if they got it.

2 over is ridiculous, the judge would laugh me out of court. I generally don't write anything less than 10 over on the highway, 5 in town.

[rant] But 1 mph over the speed limit is breaking the law right? I once heard a talk show host on the radio say: "I do 73 in my 'vette on the freeway, and any self-respecting cop will not pull me over, and if they do, I am ready to pay for the ticket" This is with a 65mph speed limit. So, if EVERYONE was to do this and almost everyone does (majority) why dont they change the speed limit? Also, wont this cause more injuries/deaths over higher speeds? But, then again, if they raised the speed limit to lets say 75, people would do 10-15mph over it and think it would be justifiable! [/rant]

Stats show that the death rate has remained basically flat since the nationwide-55 was repealed. Stats also show that the majority of traffic travels at a little under 70MPH on most limited access highways in non-peak periods. In other words, raising the speed limit to 65 or 70 doesn't make people drive faster - it just makes the average speed legal.

The way I see it:
The old woman driving down the freeway doing 55mph is more dangerous then the guy speeding at 90mph. If Im speeding Im going to be paying damn good attention to the road, the person dragging @SS is probably half asleep.

If Im speeding Im going to be paying damn good attention to the road, the person dragging @SS is probably half asleep. That's all relevant to the conditions. If I'm coming to work and traffic is flowing at 80, then I'm doing 80 with them. If it's crawling at 40, then I'm crawling, too. I doubt the average motorist can make snap decisions at 90 because most can't make them at 35. If this guy is doing 90 it better damn well be because he's with the flow of traffic (and yes, traffic does flow at 90-100 out here quite often - 30 over isn't exactly rare). Personally, a good rule of thumb to me is stick witin +/- 10 mph of the rest of traffic. That way the variance isn't so great as to make reactions impossible for yourself or others.

He is breaking the law isn't he ?? This is why people get bitter about their tickets. 10 over on the highway is 75, yet most folks wouldn't get a ticket (generally). Yet.....tack a couple more on to 75mph and ??. Do you ticket for the difference between 75mph and what the person was doing or is the ticket for the full amount ?? If you generally don't ticket for 10 over, I honestly think it's a little unfair to ticket someone for 15 over. It is this inconsistency that really frustrates me. And no, I'm not bitter about my last ticket, just very annoyed at myself for getting caught as I had seen troopers in that spot 2 or 3 times the previous week. Regards.....
