Should be finishing the Ph.D. thing this fall and am contemplating celebrating with a spell over in Europe. Late September/October is when I'm thinking, maybe to catch the CART race at Rockingham and a United home game in Newcastle. Other than that I'm pretty open to ideas. Anyone with suggestions from personal experience or otherwise? Anyone got a spare room?

London is a great town. Tons of stuff to do, you'll never be bored. We took some day trips to surrounding areas... Stratford-upon-Avon, Windsor Castle, Dover, Cambridge.. You could even take the Chunnel into France for the day. Maybe take in a play or two.. I always felt safe walking around London, even at 1am just kinda wandering around with no particular place to go. Of all the places I've been to, London is probably my favorite place to visit. I'd go back in a heartbeat.
I loved Edinburgh. The castle is beautiful. Countryside around the town is beautiful. Nice little city.
I found Glasgow to be a rather boring place, from a tourist's perspective. Just an industrial city, not much touristy stuff to do.
Try to visit other places in Europe while you're across the pond. Madrid or Rome or Athens or Amsterdam or maybe even Paris (didn't really like Paris)...

I think that beforehand, you should attend the National event to "represent" Alabama!! Kick some Texan butt! I seem to have heard a variation of that before. I wanted to go to Tallahassee's autocross so bad today, but my wife had to go in to her job and my daughter went to a student government thing in Northern Alabama. Oh well, always next week. She made me miss last month's home autocross, too, and lots of folks showed up!! That's OK, revenge is getting a new car, which I will test next week against the Contour. Good night. Good luck in England, gotta finish the doctorate first, though!

Do they have a track up there like LeMans, or the german track whose name eludes me, where you pay to drive the track with your car? In germany there are Bimmer taxis that take you thru it...

If Rockingham and Silverstone are a bit much, try to get over to Brands Hatch to see the locals have at it. There used to be a BTCC round there as well; I attended one in the late '80's. It's easy to get to from central London (it's in Dartford, and there's excellent rail service to and from). It's a beautiful track, with a lot of history (used to host the British GP).
