I figure there are some of you that have never heard of the "Big Dig" in Boston. So some of the engineers in the CEG might get a kick out of this, and everyone else. This project started over 8 years ago. It is the largest Civil Project even done in United States History. Go to The Big Dig be sure to visit the Virtual tour section along with the Photograph section, especially the May 2002 section. Let me know what you guys think of this :p

actually the big dig started almost 15 years ago. and once the highway is sunk, the work will begin above ground to make way for 30 acres of new open space downtown. about 8 acres of which will be public park land, the rest will be access paths, roadways, a botanical garden, housing, and some retail.
i went on a tour of the Dig 2 weeks ago. walked the whole legth of the tunnel from the Zachim bridge to Chinatown. the idea is amazing. and the technology is very cutting edge for the US. let's just hope it works!!!
and plans are already underway for the next big project in Boston. MassHighway and the BRA are working to create new spaces on parcels of land over the Mass Turnpike. The Turnpike Authority will sell the air rights to developers who are looking at various mixed use developments to reconnect three areas of Boston to the South End. The three areas are Chinatown, Back Bay, and Fenway.
so that madness continues here in Beantown!

That's a neat bridge design. There is one similar to it on the way through Delaware (DE Rt. 1) going to/from Ocean City, MD.
So, that tour was a tunnel under the existing Central Artery right? Have they sunk the underwater tunnels yet? That is something I want to see.

Millbury MA also had a "Little Dig" going on a few years ago, linking the Turnpike, Rt 20, and Rt 146 together. Was similar to the Big Dig in terms of inconvenience. Thought I might mention.
The big joke around Boston is that you go to work one way, but during the day those roads close for the month and you have to find a different way home. Sometimes new roads appear and others disappear within the day!
