Actually, I think the book is almost always better than the movie, regardless of the author. The only exception I can think of offhand is Fight Club. Loved the movie, didn't care for the book.

Sorry, wasn't trying to be too sarcastic. One question--isn't plutonium usually associated with fusion devices? I would assume that a suitcase unit would be a fission device (which could be smaller) using U-238???

Actually your correct. Looking at the age of those suitcase bombs, they probably were fission devices made out of U-235 or U-238. The radio-active core would still break down over time though. I dont know the specifics of nuclear technology; I did write a paper on it in Highschool, whats where I learned how the radio-active cores slowly break down.

Oh well, I guess being in the Navy I know certain things about fleet deployment strategy that other people just can't possibly know, including the director of Sum of All Fears.
I always thought that the main threat to the air wing were cruise missiles fired by submarines...No way aircraft can get that close...that why we have the F14's, and the whole enchilada...Remember when the Lybians tried?

Regarding the periscope,,,I meant the periscope structure inside the submarine...It was all shiney and chrome plated...Wakes in teh water are fixed by hydrodynamics, not materials I would think. can u imagine teh reflection in the water if it had the reflective properties of chrome?

I read this book back in 2001 and from what I hear of the movie so far, so may as well be watching "the day after" for all the movie has to do with the book...

Oh well, maybe I'll reserve judgment till I see it.

I just ordered my tickets for the wife and I to go tonight at 9.50. I used to drive by Clancy house all the time. It was just off 108 and Hall Shop. It was reported that he sold it for 2 Mil. Oh well. Everyone knows that Clancy is Ex-Military and usually writes in stuff too close to the truth so they change it for the movies. My .02 anyway. Thought this was pretty cool though ....
Time Is Money, Just Figure Out How Much
Wed May 29,10:59 AM ET

LONDON (Reuters) - Think twice next time someone asks you for "five minutes of your time" -- it could cost you more than you think.

A British professor has developed a mathematical formula to help people find out exactly how much an hour of their time is worth.

Professor Ian Walker of Warwick University investigated the value of time after research showed that over 80 percent of respondents would buy more time if they could afford it.

"Traditionally, wages or salaries have given an indication of how we are valued at work," Walker, an economics professor, said in a statement Wednesday.

"However, by looking at salaries against taxation, the cost of living and regional variations, we can see how much an hour of our time is worth whether at work or home."

Day-to-day the formula could help in making decisions, such as whether to cook a meal or to get a takeaway, or whether to take public transport or a taxi, he said.

Visitors to www.barclaycard.co.uk/timeismoney can find out the value of an hour of their time by entering their salary, the region where they work and what kind of work they do.

For example, for a professional working in London and earning 25,000 pounds ($36,570) a year, an hour would be worth 6.44 pounds ($9.42), according to the Web site.

Cooking dinner would cost 5.37 pounds -- cheaper to get a takeaway, once you add the cost of the raw materials needed to make it yourself. Brushing your teeth comes at 32 pence -- perhaps hard to find someone to do it for you for less.

Just returned from seeing it... Very much impressed. I read the book WAY back in high school; It was the 2nd Clancy novel I read. This movie definitely has me wanting to read it again. I give it 4 outta 5 stars. Why 4? some of the sequencing gets a bit long and drawn out. Other than that, it's all good: high action, high drama.

As for Clancy... his NOVELS are very close to actual tactics. The movies, however aren't as technical...

Anywho... I highly recommend!
