Well I would put in a vote for a protege. I'd go with the ES at 16k but the DX's and LX's can be had for much cheaper then that. The power is a bit on the weak side but it is quite fun trying to wrangle all the power you can. (especially doing 60 on an on/off ramp and having the wife plastered to the passenger side door laugh ) Handling is as good or better then the SVT (sorry to say that but it's true) and they'll run forever.

Im lookin for a new car and my bro has a newer protege and its so comfy- almost makes me wanna get another one but I dunno just gotta check it out.. I dont kno what I want I just kno I want a new car! lol my protege is reliable but I am just ready for something new!

The dealer I stopped at had a waiting list for at least the next year eek

Unless I am mistaken it seems that you are trying to get a car more towards the 13-14k area than what everyone seems to reccomend (20k cars) My friend picked up a se-r spec v fairly recently and I don't really like it all that much, not what I would spend my $20k on for sure.

-FWIW, the Cavalier/sunfire is loosing the 2.4L this year as it's being replaced by the 2.2l "ecotec"

-As many people have stated protege's are good cars but won't win you any races, if that's not important these deserve a serious look.

-If you could find a 2001 sentra 2.0 se, you would probably be happy with it, although it still technically is not a NEW car.

-I know someone that picked up a new accord (2002, DX) for 14.6k, which basically makes the civic moot, unless u want an ex or something, once again I still dislike honda

-not sure if you want to stay totally new or not, because there are some cars in that price range u can get a good deal on used

Every time I come online I wonder if the forums will be up

If it's a straigh line race, not until the turbo's and SC's come out. As of right now Protege's are one of the hotest cars on the SCCA Tour series because of their awesome handling!
