Am I just wasting my time trying to unsubscribe from these things, because it certainly seems that way! I guess I can't expect that much from a free e-mail account. I didn't get to check my account for about 2 weeks and had over 250 junk e-mails even with hotmail's "high junkmail filter" activated. mad mad mad mad mad mad mad mad

One of the worst things you can do is "unsubscribe". They then know you have a working address and spam you more! frown

My wife is also being spammed on Hotmail!

Is the subject something like, "FREE PORN"?

She also had it going to our Outlook account at home! mad

We had to delete here home account and create a new one! As for the Hotmail, there is a setting that will only allow messages to be sent to you if the person sending it is in your address list!

Some people use it some don't, there are advantages either way!

I don't get the FREE PORN messages, but my wife does. The spam I get is mostly "great offers" and other people tying to sell me sh*t I don't want. I wanted to change my e-mail address, but I couldn't find a way to do it without starting a new account.

The unsubscribe trick has been around a while. All it does is confirm the address they spammed was used by a person and add it to a new spam list of confirmed addresses selling it for a higher amount.

The only way that current problems will be aleaviated is by institution an Email transmission tax. Some where around 5 cents an email would be a good start. This would cut down on the amount of internet and intranet email garbage and chain mails that float around. I for one would be happy to pay it to see this crap end. Just think of what a 100,000 list spam would cost a spammer to do. ISP tracking of email is not a hard or uncommon thing to impliment either.

This however does bring up issues of internet taxes and government regulation of the internet. Something that won't be discussed again until 2005.

With Hotmail, you can,

Choose how long you would like to hold on to 'junk' mail before it is deleted, then click OK.
Immediate Deletion Delayed Deletion
Messages identified as 'junk' will be deleted immediately, never reaching your account. 'Junk' messages will be filtered to the Junk Mail folder and deleted after 7 days.

I think you may have to create a new Hotmail Account, send everyone your new address and then leave the old one for a month or so so that it gets deleted by Hotmail.

I believe its ninety days before Hotmail wipes your account off of the servers.

I get both the 'FREE PORN!' plus I have won like a million trips, I can now work at home, and there is money waiting for me.

Its rather annoying, but I have my Hotmail filters on to catch most of it.

You are right, it is 90 days for permanent deletion.

**Copied from Hotmail FAQ's,

What does it mean when my account becomes "inactive"?
Currently, if you do not sign in to your MSN Hotmail account for 30 days, or if you do not sign in within the first 10 days, your account will become "inactive." Stored e-mail and addresses will be permanently deleted, and inbound e-mail will be refused. Your .NET Passport will still function, and your Hotmail e-mail name will be reserved. To reactivate your account, go to http://www.hotmail.com and enter your sign-in name and password. You will then be able to send and receive e-mail using MSN Hotmail once again. If your account stays inactive for an additional 90 days, it will be permanently deleted.

My Hotmail account gets about 40 spams a day. If you really want to eliminate spam, the only option is to set the account to delete anything not sent from addresses in your address book.

Unfortunately, this makes it difficult to purchase items over eBay, etc., since you will receive a purchase confirmation from the seller.

Many spams come from the same domain address. You can add these domains to your "block sender" list. This worked pretty well for me until I bought something from CDNow a few weeks ago
