For the second time tonight my neighbor's male Pit got out and attacked my dog while he was on his chain. I live in a townhome so the backyard is a "community area". His Pit locked onto my German Shepard's chest. He jumped on his pit to keep it from going for my dogs throat. As his pit bit down on my dogs chest, my dog went to bite his Pit and as he was on top of his dog my dog ended up biting him in the arm, badly. He has two nasty puncture wounds on his arm, but he doesn't want to go to the hospital.
Both of our dogs are up to date on Rabies, etc. The twist is that I'm pretty good friends with him. If it had been anyone else's dog in the neighborhood I'm sure they would have called the cops and his dog would have been put down.
Again, my dog was on his 10' chain, his pit got out when his daughter opened his door. I know that I am in no way at fault, and he got bit becaue he jumped in the middle of it to avoid his dog from killing mine. My first reaction when his dog got on to mine was to grab my 9mm and go out and shoot it as this is the second time his Pit has attacked my dog while it was on it's chain. He said "I guess I'm gonna have to have him put down", but I doubt he will do it. He lives directly next door to me, if it had been my puppy or probably any neighbors dog it would be dead.
My dog has 2 pretty bad puncture wounds on his chest, and 1 under his eye. He is not hurt bad enough to go to the vet, he is running around OK. My neighbor had 2 puncture wounds on either side of his right elbow, and a big scrape on his forearm. It looks like my dog got him with his canines, they are deep puncture wounds, but he insists he doesn't have to go to the hospital.
His Pit has a deep puncture would on his head, and my dog bit clear thru his lip. Sorry if I'm rambling but I'm a little shook up.
Please give me whatever advice you have to offer, I'm unsure as to what to do. I'm thinking about bringing my dog to the vet on Friday, and bringing him the bill for whatever they do. I'm pretty sure that if authorities got involved his dog would be put down, mine would be quarantined for 2 weeks, and he would probably get a failure to control your animal or something. Incidently in Ohio you are required to have 50,000 dollars liability insurance on any pit bull or pit mix, which he doesn't have. In a way, I wish I would have shot his dog but then the poop would hit the fan as the cops would come and I'm not sure if I would have gotten arrested.

That's sort of a rough situation. If you're friends with him, maybe you should talk to him about this and ask him. Does he have a 10' chain for his dog too, or does he walk him himself when he goes out? It's sad when dogs have to get put down, but sometimes it is necessary when dogs have temperment problems like that. German Shepards are certainly not small dogs, and if a Pit Bull is attacking yours I'd be concerned about any children or other people who might be in the area. About how old is his daughter that let out the dog? If she's old enough to understand, maybe her Dad should try to tell her the situation and explain what's going on. I don't know....?

His daughter is 4. Old enough to open the door but now to know better. He always had his male Pit on a leash when he lets it out. His male pit will instantly attack any animal it sees. Dog, Cat, racoon, whatever. He is fine around people, no aggression towards kids or anything. In both instances my dog was on his chain, his dog was accidentally let out. The first time, we where talking outside, he went inside to grab something, his pit slipped in between his legs. Today, he was coming over to talk to me about screech fighting in celebrity boxing, his daughter opened the door to see where he was going, and his pit slipped out. Milan - It's not that easy, our kids play together all the time and I've been pretty good friends with him for 3 years. When I got out to the dogs, we started to get them broken apart. I told myself that if his dog got latched on to mine's throat, I was marching inside and grabbing this: And shooting it in the head...

I'm sure it wouldn't help out your friendship, but when those things lock their jaws there really isn't much you can do...? Sorry you're in this situation. I guess watch your dog a little closer when s/he's outside.

A piece of meat with some prestone steak sauce can work over time.

Tough situation? I have two kids and I would be more concerned about them than my dog (I have a sheltie). Those pit?s can be very dangerous with children.
I would have to say screw this guy, and definitely make him pay your vet bill! Why would you even consider paying it, when all your dog was doing was chill?in on his chain? You own him? you hold all the cards. You?re being cool about the whole thing so far, but I would definitely lay down the law at this point: 1. He pays vet bills. 2. Time to find Mr. Friendly a new home or put him down. Another thing is the Insurance??? If the law in your state is that he must have insurance for his pit bull (good law!), he better damn well have insurance!!! Is he above the law? The scary part is that the dog is clearly dangerous.
I know he?s your bud, but enough is enough? his dog will eventually kill your dog. And God forbid that pit ever seeing a child as a threat.
good luck man!

Talk with your neighbor. Tell them this is not acceptable and that the status quo is not acceptable. Tell them to either chain up his dog, remove his teeth and claws, give him away or sell him, put it down, or you'll ask the cops to do it for them.
Insist that this has happened a couple of times, and that they must do something.
In the meantime, I'd try to get your dog inside your house or to a relative's place; somewhere out of reach of the pit.

Tough call, but how can you be so sure that it will continue to only attack animals? What enjoyment can be had from a pet that does such things when loose? My neighbor's dog is never in a pen or on a chain and runs across the street to bring me his tennis ball to throw; what a great dog.

first...I think you should appeal to he reason. Tell him he needs to change up his dog. Second tell him that his dog no matter what he thinks could easily attack and kill one of his children or a neighbors child. Stress that fact that he is responsible for animals. Do this calmly and be understanding that he most likly is stuck in hard place.
