Wasup everyone. I just recently purchased a 98 Contour SE (would have liked and SVT but way out of my price range). I have been checking these forums and trying to figure out what I should start adding to my car once I get the money. My question is, out of all these performance upgrades such as intakes, exhausts and especially headers, are any of these things emission legal. I live in a section of Ohio that has the e-check and I want to know what I am getting into before I spend the money on a part that will by any means make my car emissions legal. Sorry if this has been answered before. Thanks for the help.

I already checked the search function but that doesnt really tell you too much in certain situations. Such as this one.

Cat back's are legal. K&N drop in. Suspension, tires, brakes are legal.

If you are going to post a link to search, at least post ONE thread that you searched for that answers his question. To answer the question, headers ARE NOT legal, since they eliminate a set of cats (in the manifolds). A good inspector will fail you on the visual.

Thanks. I didn't really think they were legal. The funny thing is, when I get an emission check, they never look underneath the hood. Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it.

Legal: Above plus performance chip, supercharger, sho-shop Y (not the off-road), blah-blah. Basically anything that doesn't delete any of the three cat canisters. There may be a law about replacing the stock cat before 50k miles, but somebody else will have to chime in on that one.
Illegal, but you could probably get away with: Headers, gutting pre-cats (but not the main). Theory is, by the time you get to the check station, the main cat is warm enough to be working.
Right out: "Off-road" Y-pipes, gutting main cat, etc.
"Function before fashion."

Another Columbus guy! Wow! I see em come out of the woodwork, but they never want to meet up! Do I smell that bad? Anyways, want to get together sometime Maverik? Most of the Ohio guys are up North(Youngstown/Cleveland), so I don't get to hang out with them much. I have no life other than being here on CEG(lol), so drop me an e-mail if you would like to meet up(my wife is no fun to talk to about cars). Welcome to CEG!
