Anyone do this? You know, E*Trade, Datek, Suretrade, etc....?

What broker do you use and why?

I'm interested in investing in Mutual Funds (growth mostly, since I have many years until retirement). I already have other retirment accounts, including a Deferred Compensation (section 457) account. I don't put much into it (about $100 - $120 twice a month over the last 5 years or so), but it's sitting as just over $15,000 right now.

What I need is the ability to open an online accout with minimal balance and make contributions either on a regular basis (small), or whenever I feel like it (bit larger).

I found this at E*Trade, and it looks rather promising.

Recommendations?

Suretrade was bought out by Quick&Reilly. Now they charge me almost $20/trade. Needless to say I haven't traded since they took over.

Although I haven't opened an account with them, ShareBuilder looks interesting. They charge $4/trade or $12/month for unlimited trades, but they only make your trade during a certain time period during the day. They really push long term investing. No minimum balance to open.

Datek has $9.99/trades. I have recently looked at them, and they seem pretty good. They have several neat tools. No minimum balance to open.

I use sharebuilder on a monthly deduction basis. I love it. You can beat the price, and there is no minimums whatsoever.

cheapest isn't always the best. you should sign up with free accounts for the ones you're considering and 'test drive' them to see if you like the layout. i didn't like datek's layout at all, so it didn't justify me saving $10 per trade. i don't day trade (anymore) so $10 more per trade is no big deal to me. datek has improved a bit however, since i last used it. so you may want to give it a try, otherwise i like etrade a lot. also consider if you want a company that has good research, a lot of these $4.99/trade companies have no research at all. they're just trading firms. the best seems to be schwabb (brother has this, but pays some ridiculous rate for trading). etrade has pretty good research as well. just a few things to consider.

Thanks for all the input. What about that link above, does that look like a good MF?
