I'd definately agree with OhSigmaChi. DO NOT ENLIST IN THE USMC! NEVER! NEVER EVER! I'm not knocking Jarheads, but if you want cushy, go Army reserve. They have the BEST college program. The USAF and Coast Guard are pretty good too. One thing I learned real early is: DO NOT BELIEVE RECRUITERS!!!
I am currently active duty Coast Guard and am Stationed here at the Coast Guard Academy. I work as and E4 Storekeeper third Class. Its real nice! Of course, I've put my time in to have it so cushy (though the area sucks). I spent 6 months underway in the Persian Gulf on my last ship out of Seattle. The marines were all on the other ships in the Battle Group. If you're hard charging, go for it. But it sounds like you want the smoothest road possible, and the USMC aint it!!! Check out Army reserves. Their College money is unsurpassed. The CG is pretty good to me. Active duty, they pay for all my schooling that I take at night. Then when I get out, I have the GI bill for the rest of my schooling. Pretty good deal!
Have you thought at all about the Coast Guard Academy? They really have some good programs. Check it out.
Good luck in your decision, but REALLY, think about it!!!! laugh

some more things that come with the marine corps...

1) The history. the marine corps has one of the best histories in the world!! we are unsurpassed in everything!! no one is better, we are americas 911 force in readiness, we are always on the job, and we never fail!!! You will be amazed at the history and awesomeness of it all... just like rachel should know, cause her grandfather was seen with the likes of one of the best marines ever.. "Chesty" Puller!!! He earned 5 navy crosses!! the only one.. ever...and we have two of the only medal of honor winners that was awarded that medal not once... but twice.. Dan Daly(enlisted) and Smedley Butler(officer) one from each side of the house!!

2) and that brings me to the pride you get when in the corps!! the history alone is enough to make you stut around with a huge chest, and everyone wonders why marines are soooo confident... well duh... cause we see it this way.. if they can do it ... and they where trained the same way as im being trained and taught ,... then why the hell cant i be that good.. why cant i stand up in front of enemy fire and yell "come on you sorry sons-a-B******!! is that all you got!!" ... or be one of the hundreds of marines who loved and cared for their country and brother marines so much that they would jump on not only one, but two grenades to save their fellow marines lives so they could force the next machine gun position and over run it and win the battle securing one more foot hold in the war.. keepin america free and its people alive....

I could go on and on about this stuff, and the more i talk about it the more **** I get ( all of you marines and former marines will know what you can fill in the blank.. hint, starts with H wink laugh )...

ill prob add more motivation later...

Good God frown I had hoped it wouldn't come down to this but I'm afraid I'm gonna have to get into a pissin' match with a Jarhead

Well I guess first off I'll start with the erronious statements about the Army. Here goes...

Quote:
THE ARMY FUDGING SUX!!!
Really? I've been in almost 2 years now and I love every minute of my job, the people I work with are great and my Posts are a hell of alot nicer than yours.

Quote:
I would never ever ever ever ever ever put myself through the hell you will experience and the shamefullness that you will undergo in the army!!! I mean they have freggin stress cards that they can whip out at any time during their recruit training!!! what is that crap,
Your right there is some hell; in basic training, I have several good Marine friends and I will tell you what they told me: Army Basic training is just as tough as Marine Basic only a month shorter(at least Basic at Ft. Leonard Wood is, I can't comment on Ft. Jackson  ); and the only way to get a stress card in the Army is to undergo a psychogical eval during basic because you had a break down or have threatened suicide(this same eval also starts you separation from the Army on a Med. Board), otherwise a "piddly" Drill is gonna be all up in you a$$ if your $h!t isn't squared away.

Quote:
If you cant handle a piddly little drill sergeant talkin to you then you dont deserve to be in the service
I whole heartedly agree, thats why people who can't hack it go back to wherever they came from, oh, and by the way, ALL of my drill Sergeants were either Airborne Rangers or Special Forces qualified, so you call them "piddly " to their face and its your A$$)

Quote:
And I dont who it was that said you will be an E-nothing.... but that is totally wrong, for one I picked up CPL (E-4) in less than 1.5 yrs in the corps with 12months of it in school
That was me... I went all the way through basic getting paid as an E-3, yep that's right from day one, I'll make E-5 in less than 26mos

Quote:
AND... it is the only branch in the service with meritorious promotions, which is how i picked up all of my rank!!
Wrong again buddy boy, check you regs we have too(see above) plus even those who come in as an E-1
can get promoted on an accellerated scale. Try
E-5 in 23mos for some MOS's(Jobs for you civilian reading this)

Quote:
yes the marine corps is not for everyone,
See, you just contradicted almost your entire starment? The reason it isn't for everybody is what makes you "The Few, The Proud, The Marines"

I too have much more to say so bring it on Devil Dog and let's see what you got wink :p
