I saw in a Taurus brochure that Ford offered a remote starter as an accessory, I was wondering if these worked with our cars? I have the factory RKE system, but would like a remote starter...I looked at AstroStarts, since they're the best aftermarket system you can buy...but I'd much rather have one made my the same company that made my car. But would it work with my Mystique? And if it dosen't, and I did get an AsterStart.....are there any features I'd lost by not being able to use my RKE system? Will the lights still come on when you unlock/pop the trunk? Will the horn still beep and lights still flash when I lock it? I like my beeper! I saw tho, that with Asterstarts, the parking lights flash when you unlock it...I like that feature...but I dont wanna lose my beeper... :p

I didn't know that ford even offered a remote start period, but I think it would work on your car(Contour and Mystique are the same car just differant name basically)the mystique is more luxurious.

It's an aftermarket part that some dealers offer that have a working relationship with the local sound and security shop. So your answer is yes it will work with our cars. Unless it is mtx then it is actually illegal for them to install it. The liability would be thiers if you left your car in gear and tried to start it remotley.

its not an aftermarket system....it's made by ford (I can tell, looks exactly like the remote for my car, just it has the start/stop button where the mercury emblem is on mine) and an aftermarket system would NOT be in a brochure for the Taurus....it's also in the Crown Viv brochure, Focus, Escort, and Windstar ones......just I hope it would work

It may have the Ford label on it but it isn't much different from the stuff you buy at the sound shops. Ford has had a line of dealer installed alarms for years. I can remember installing them at least as far back as 1988. The remote start is just one of the latest iterations. If it is anything like the old stuff, it is nothing special.

Hey MystyMystique, I work in the Vehicle Personalization group at Ford and here is the dealer about the Remote Start. Ford doesn't actually make them. They offer the systems made by a place called CodeAlarm located in Madison Heights, MI. We haven't had any complaints about the system. Does that help any?

I used to have an auto starter on my MTX Civic about 5 years ago now. I loved the thing. If you tried to start it in gear it simply wouldn't. The shop installed a switch that would only allow the car to be started in Neutral. I am looking forward to putting one on my SVT someday but just don't have the funds for it right now.

I have one on my SVT. It has a lot of security built in, there's no way you could mess it up. FWIW, they are legal in Canada, heck my mom has the same as mine on her MTX Protege

I have the ford remote start system on my mystique.
It works well enough, but you pay more to have the Ford-branded remote. The only reason I got the Ford unit instead of an aftermarket (and cheaper!) starter was because of warranty concerns. I didn't want to void my extended warranty by having a non-ford product installed. It costs more... much more... but it works well.
If you do get the Ford remote start -- get the silver version (as opposed to the bronze). That way, you can have all of your remote functions (doors, trunk, start, panic) on one remote. I got the bronze system, and I have two remotes... one for doors, one for remote start.
Oh yeah -- if you start the car by remote, you then cannot use your remote door or trunk release... at least that's how mine got set up. If anyone knows a way around this, let me know please.
