Does anyone know if there are replacement mirrors, retrofix kits, or what would be involved in custom building heated side-view mirrors on a 98+ Contour? This has been an unusually mild winter in MI so they wouldn't have been much use this year, but I wouldn't mind being better prepared for next winter.

They were optional equipment on 95's and possibly 96's so you might want to have a good hard look at an early Contique to see if they would mount in place your yours. If they will mount up I'm sure that you can figure out the wiring.

You can get them off of a pre-98 tour. They are exactly the same, but they are expensive though because of the heating element behind the mirror. They are just wired up to the rear window defroster switch.

Yeah the mirrors will fit up fine since I replaced my drivers side mirror with a 99. since my car was built in 97 it had pre threaded screw holes and the newers ones dont. The painted area is just a slight different shape. The only thing I could foresee is the wiring problem if they dont already exist on the connector.

Ask Chris Arshlaine (sp???) (sorry dude) in the NJ forums. He looked into this along time ago. Did not work for him though

Good feedback! Thanks!
I'll have to take a closer look at a pre-98 to see if the slightly different shape would bug me too much. I wonder if I could swap the guts of a pre-98 mirror and the guts of my mirror and keep the housing. I'm not worried about the wiring unless the harness wires were down-graded after de-contenting the heated mirror option. In that case (and possibly in either event), I could just re-content the TC switch and use that for the mirror heaters (with a relay). After all, I don't generally want the mirrors heated when I'm only using the rear window defroster to clear fog.
