I bought a '99 Mystique and wish i had got a V6. what i hate about my engine is the very loud and harsh noise while excelerating. can i do performance mods which will make it faster,smoother, or quieter? i wab't to work with what i have got for an engine already if i can. if not i will wait and save $$ for an SVT.

I want an SVT too, but doesn't every Contour owner without an SVT :p

4cyl Zetec performance modifications worth doing? Well I have the same engine and there is a whole world of things to improve performance, the reason you are getting such a loud noise is because the engine stock is so restrictive. One of the best, and first things you should start with is removal of the mid resonator. Will cost you about 40$ to have straight pipe put in. Will add a lot of noticable high end power. The whole exaust system is restrictive so the Cat-back system will make a nice jump in your power, and an air intake, will give your car a little growl, not a raspy loud noise, but a nice sound. After that its up to you, a few things I have done to mine are (header...(90$ on nopi e-cat) adjustable cam gears, billet underdrive pulley, MSDS ingnition, 9MM plug wires...etc etc.

You can get a really nice horsepower upgrade from Terry Haines in a little while for less than $4000. 300+ HP, turbocharged fun to suprise the Camaros and Mustangs

Nope. Not in a million years. If you GAVE me an SVT I'd probably trade it in and buy a used Zetec so I could build it up. No, I'm not joking. Have you ever worked on one of those frigin' things its a pain in the a$$! No offence to you SVT/Duratec guys, I still hold that engine in the highest regard and, up until very recently, I would have like to own on. But not anymore.

BTW, modding a stock car to make more horsepower/faster doesn't usually coincide with making it 'smoother, and quiter'. Just give it some more power and you'll be glad you have it...trust me. Browse the Zetec forum for what we've been doing with our cars for the last year.

I consider the V6 a challenge to work on. Makes it a little more fun. NOT! But I have all the tools I need to get the job done right!

Plus when it's all said and done you get to watch jaws drop when you tell them "it's only a little four banger" And terry's TC kit will make that thing a "4-bangin nightmare".

I'm gonna put "4-Banging Nightmare" across the back window when the TC is released
