I have a 99se MTX. THe problem is when I'm around 1/4 tank of gas I get a weird thisng. It seems like I'm getting fuel cutout in 1st and 2nd. When the gas tank is at least over half I don't have this problem. This tends to happen more at WOT ( wide open throttle). You guys have any ideas?

Dirty tank filter or fuel pump issue. Both are not trivial to fix and you can cause serious harm to yourself and the car if you don't know what your doing.

First, change the filter...easy 10 minute job if you don't mind getting a little gasoline on you.

Second, don't let the car get too low. Many modern cars run at higher fuel pressures than cars used to so when the tank is low there is less fuel the pump has to use. Plus, when you accelrate the pump is trying to suck in gas that may have 'slid' away from the pumps pick up so its trying to suck in gas that isn't there. I doubt the pump is a problem but you might check it out if the car does this consistently. The pump is under neath the back seat and I believe you can test it while its still installed in the car. Check a Haynes manual.

as SQ said it is EASY to change the fuel filter... I wouldn't even say it takes 10 minuts to do.
BTW do you have a tach on your car? if so what RPM does it cut the fuel off at or is it random.

No, unfortunately I do not have a tach. Generally at WOT it happens at about 25mph, then i shift to second at it continues to about 30-32mph. then shift to third and itll wind all the way to almost 75mph. I do love the tranny in this car, too bad its a 4cyl. GOD I WANT AN SVT!!!!

Ahh yes sell your zetec because it has 1 problem and buy a SVT . Then you will have not 1 problem to fix.... you will have 10 things to fix . Find a good mechanic before you buy a duratec tour . eek

first off you really don't want an SVT... a MTX Zetec with a little money can be just as fun laugh I have driven the SVT before it isn't all that great... and with a few mods you'll be able to keep up with the ATX duratecs :p
