Well, it's really a pump, but vaccum is a part of a pump, so in a roundabout way, yes. How confusing is that?

You will notice with the cooler more dense air that the response has seemed to improve. Guys one thing you HAVE to make sure of is that the tubing should not be able to ingest water! Be VERY CAREFUL with a set-up that gets real close to the bumper unless you just want to never drive in the rain....There is a AEM bypass valve which will help if you want to put the intake up by the bumper. I would just take and run the tube along the area where the old fender resonator and inlet is.

Removed both intake resonators and airbox. Installed APC air filter and APC crankcase ventilation filter. Removed exhaust resonator.
Installed XM Satellite Radio. Replaced bad alternator and 175a fusible link...much fun!
Intake plenum---GONE!!!!

I did it in my Quad4 Pontiac years ago. I bought some 5" dryer ducting, sealed it against the enlarged opening in the airbox. It snaked around behind the bumper and fed off the backside of the grille. Didn't notice any driveability issues with rain or snow. The K&N caught quite a few bugs and I would need to get them off of it from time to time. I did notice a little better response on the freeway though. smile

I have been thinking about it for my car, but haven't done it yet.

Couple of things.

Ram air setups can not be proven on a dyno (standing still and ram air don't go together). A 1/4 track is too short to gain enough speed to take advantage of a ram air set up. So you may never be able to confirm any gains.

The volume or air required to snake up the tubing is such that you would need to be travelling excessively fast to see any benefit- as Hector posted.

I think some people may be over-thinking the solution. I would be focusing on an open-element filter with a proven heatshield. If you can successfully shield the filter and allow it to draw air from the open fender space (behind the boot and tubing when you remove the airbox), you will likely have better results.

On the bright side, I don't think it will hurt anything (except hydro-lock if you run over a deep puddle and your car ingests water).

I think Pontiac would disagree with you... however their ram air is more a direct shot into the engine that what it trying to be done here.

This is what the AEM bypass valve will help.

Incidentally, it is kinda funny. We had some rain a couple of days ago that flooded to the bottom of our install bay doors. Bldg is on a hill to a degree. Put it this way, we could not move cars in our out for a while. It was about 3 to 4 ft deep. Anyhoo, some goofball in a toyota pick-up truck came flying thru the lot doing about 20mph. My installers saw him coming and tried to slow him down.....he didn't see em.....fllloooompphhh, car sputters, smoke rises from hood, car dead. Dude jumps out in water thigh deep and exclaims; "It just died!" DUH!

Car #2 a honda - a little slower, water enters, pops hood, car sputters, smoke rises, guess what...you guessed it...car dead. Two cars got towed that day.

Do a search for "AEM Bypass valve" it looks like a flying saucer shaped thing inline in the intake tube.

All that AEM thing is a piece of foam with two rubber hoses to clamp onto your intake. Those things aren't cheap either. Damn AEM.
