can someone explain to me what the VCT does on a zetec? and if it hinders performance, if it is possible to remove?? I have a slight clue what it does, but I am not 100% sure. Could someone please help me ?

it is for emissions... far as I can remember any one with a Zetec with VCT that has tried to remove it has cause a CEL doing so. it doesn't hurt performance but from what I learned on the yahoo email list for the Zetec that the Lotus 7 guys didn't want it cause they were less responsive to mods than the non VCT Zetec.

VCT (Variable CDam Timing) on the Zetec works on the exhaust side to eliminate the need for an EGR valve; whether it improves/doesn't affect/detracts from performance is hard to tell since I don't have a non-vct zetec to compare with.....my .02 cool

Is the smoke alarm in your house also known as the "dinner bell"?

VCT let Ford use more aggressive cams in an emissions controlled engine. Compare the ZX2 cams and the Focus cams

Intake:
ZX2 (VCT) 214 deg @ 0.050", 0.367" lift
Focus 205 deg @ 0.050, 0.352" lift

Exhaust
ZX2 (VCT) 212 deg @ 0.050", 0.338" lift (exact duration not verified, yet)
Focus 206 deg @ 0.050", 0.343" lift

The VCT advances the exhaust cam 30 crank degrees under certain conditions, including low rpm. This reduces overlap and improves low end torque. VCT also allowed Ford to use longer duration cams in an emissions controlled engine.

If you are building a non-emissions motor the VCT isn't going to help performance (except maybe improve low-mid torque in a road course racing application.)

However, if you need to meet emissions testing, VCT will let you use longer duration cams, especially at lower rpm, before emissions become a problem.
