A couple of my spark plugs had oil on them when I removed them. Is this normal? If not, what's wrong? I believe the 4th cylinder(farthest away from coil)had the most oil, 3rd may have had some.

Unfortunately, that's not normal. frown It means that oil is leaking into your combustion chamber. Could be many things... piston rings, gasket, etc.

I'm sure that having oil in two adjacent cylinders is important in detemining the cause, but I've been lucky enough to never have to deal with this problem myself. We'll have to defer to someone else's expertise on the most likely cause.

Good luck!

I just posted to similar question on this was there oil in the hole in other words when you put your whench down there doesd it come out with oil on it. even just a little indicates a bad vavle cover gasket. see when things like this happen they ussally happen to all plugs not just one or two and the valve cover gasket is very common on all high millage DOHC 4 cycl so check that first its cheap and simple.

I'll put a new valve cover gasket on the first chance I get to go to my dad's house, so that I'll have torque ratchet available. It does have to be torqued right? Should I get the gasket from Ford or the internet?

The valve cover is not too picky about torque, I don't think -- but the recommended torque is pretty light, like only screwdriver tight, so just don't bear down on it.

To remove the valve cover, I just have to take all those bolts off the top of it, right? I'm gettin' a Haynes manual soon, I'm sure it'll tell me. Any good place to get it cheap from? www.fordpartsonline.com has 3 valve cover gaskets listed. one for contour, mystiques, one says left, one says right. Wouldn't they be different from 4 cyl to 6 cyl? Do head gaskets go bad a lot? Those are fairly cheap too.
