I am new to the group, though I have had my 96' GL for about 2 years. I was just wondering if anyone knows what kind of mods a poor college student can do to fix up his car for cheap and still make it more fun.
please email me back if you know.
thanks,
Johhny

For a first mod I would recommend an intake.
Note: in California, you'd better keep the old one on hand in order to pass smog inspections. This may apply in some other states too, for all I know.
96 GL Zetec ATX, white with pinstripe, nickname " Sam Smooth " mods so far: CTA intake with homemade heat shield, KVR drilled front rotors & carbon pads w/ 500° fluid planned mods: exhaust (want to keep it quiet), e-ram (awaiting installation), diablo chip involuntary mods: compression increased after head gasket failure

Intake is good but recomend the jet chip the reason is be cause a lot of times the computer will try over compensate for the intake thus making the car run crap mine did any way and the chip solved that on the other hand if do just the chip and no the intake you wont feal any difrence HP the cost me ove 300 bucks but soem one posted saying it was in the summit catalog for 199 figures i have disease that does not allow me to save money also and you can do this before any thing is the B&M shift kit its about 200 dollars like mentioned befor cause my diease you can probably find it cheaper and it almost needed an auto some pepole have had trouble locating it but my local race shop got for me no problem.

So let me get this straight. You have 46 posts. You are recommeding a chip that no one has tried before and then claim that an intake will make your car run like crap? Dear lord... Please perform a search and see what people who actually know what they are talking about have to say on the subject. Sorry to be harsh but I can't stand people talking out of their butt.

....I thought the B&m shifter kit works only on 98+ models. If it can work on my 95 MTX. I'll definately get one(I too suffer from the same disease). ....Anyways, for bang for the buck basic performance upgrade. You can start with a simple air filter or complete CAI depending on your budget. I recommend an open end filter such as AKIMOTO or anything similar. I have the MONSTER FLO filter that uses a breathable thick foam and a mesh-lke covering allowing optional flow and doesn't require a cleaning kit like K&N.You can use WD40 to clean out the foam/mesh filter, squeeze dry & re-install.( Just keep in mind that if you use the more free-flow covering you decrease the filtering efficiency) Next is to get rid of your stock piping and go your muffler shop to fabricate a CAT-BACK exhaust and muffler with 2.25 to 2.5" pipng, depending on how loud you want to go. Another upgrade are your spark plug wires. Your entry set are the MAGNECOR wires @ about something about $90 the most....probably you can get them much less. A step higher are the Nology wires & last are the Direct Hits which I have & they are GREAT!!!. CHIPS are good to, but you HAVE TO USE A HIGHER OCTANE GAS for optimal performance....GOOD LUCK with your upgrades and welcome!!!!!

OMG- what the hell is going on here?
I've got people spouting the most incorrect information I have ever read on a site before.
WD40 to clean and oil an intake filter???
Somebody stop the madness...
