OK the obvious is belt chewed but why? The car has only 29727 miles. I was hearing a scraping sound, so I pulled the timing cover and found this. It also is ridding on the edge of the pullys.

The dealer is suppose to look at it when I take it in for the dash. Does work done under warranty cost me anything out of pocket?

No way, warranty work shouldn't cost you anything. Especially for a Timing belt that looks like that at less than 30K!! I'm at near 84K and can still read text on my belt! Get that thing to a dealer before it breaks on you. Good Luck. laugh

Edit:

Theres is/was a recall/TSB for a 'revised' timing belt cover because of the belt slapping against the cover, thats most likely your problem. Don't let them deny you service though because of your cover not being the 'new' style.

My guess would be that it's that extra ?m? in your timming that is chewing up your belt.  There's only supposed to be one ?m? in ?timing?, and there's really only room for one ?m?.  You cram an extra ?m? in there, and it seems obvious to me that your belt will drag against it, with results very much like those shown in your picture.

Make certain, when your dealer replaces that belt, that he removes that extra ?m? from your timming.

Moonlight Blue 1996 Mercury Mystique GS , Zetec engine, ATX.  No mods. (Well, OK, one mod.  Before I got rid of my previous car, a 1994 Tempo, I swapped radios.  I liked the Tempo's radio better.  That counts as a mod, doesn't it?  I also kept one of my Tempo's wheels to use as a spare.  I hate those stupid ?compact? spares that come with modern cars.  Does this count as a mod?  If so, I guess I have two mods.  Replaced burned/melted blower switch and connector on 19 February 2002 with a 1P3T toggle switch from Marvac and a Molex connector from Rat Shack; I guess this now makes three mods.)

Hay easy with my inability to spell. It's not my fault, my dad can't spell either. Nice "HMF" award. Anyway, they are talking like they will fix it when they install the new dash. Well see. If it is the extra m then they can do an 'm'indectomy. I'll keep ya informed.
