This is from my Service CD-ROM for a 98 Contour with the 2.0 Zetec. It may be slightly different for a 97 1.8 Mondeo...doubtful...but maybe. laugh I don't see anything about removing the engine or even raising it so the job shouldn't be too hard.
--------------------------------------------------------
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

µ 2. Remove the heat shield.

1 Undo the upper bolt/nut.

l Remove the coolant hose bracket and the engine lifting eye, and pull out the engine oil dipstick tube.

2 Remove the bracket for the tube/hose (A/C).

3 Remove the lower bolts.

µ 3. Disconnect the three way catalytic converter (TWC) from the exhaust manifold.

4. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to «Section 100-02».

µ 5. Remove the TWC.

1 Remove the bolt and the retaining clip for the TWC.

2 Disconnect the TWC from the exhaust system.

3 Unhook the TWC from the rubber mountings.

4 Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.

5 Remove the TWC from the bracket.

6. Drain the engine oil.

l Reinstall and tighten the drain plug.

µ 7. Remove the oil pan bolts (shown at removed engine).

µ 8. CAUTION:
Do not damage the mating faces.

Remove the oil pan (shown at removed engine).

l Separate the oil pan from the lower crankcase using a sharp Spatula. Release the oil pan from the lower crankcase by tapping slightly against the tightend drain plug with a Rubber hammer.

Installation

1. Preparatory operations

l Note:
Do not damage the mating faces.

Clean the mating faces from old sealer.

l Two studs, M6 x 20 - screw them in to guide the oil pan.

l Note:
The mating faces must be free of oil and gasket residue.

Clean the oil pan using Solvent to remove any oil residue or sludge.

µ 2. Note:
Install the oil pan within 10 minutes after applying the sealer.

Apply a 3 mm bead of Sealer to the mating face of the oil pan.

µ 3. Note:
Tightening sequence.

Install the oil pan and screw in the drain plug with a new oil seal (shown at removed engine).

l Tighten the bolts in indicated sequence shown in two stages:

l Stage 1: 6 Nm

l Stage 2: 10 Nm

µ 4. Install the three way catalytic converter (TWC).

l Guide the TWC onto the exhaust manifold studs and into the exhaust.

1 Attach the TWC to the bracket.

2 Connect the HO2S electrical connector.

3 Hook the TWC into the rubber mounting.

4 Connect the TWC to the exhaust.

5 Note:
The TWC must be up against the exhaust manifold.

Secure the retaining clip for the TWC and install in the bolt.

5. Lower the vehicle.

µ 6. Attach the TWC to the exhaust manifold.

µ 7. Install the heat shield.

l Insert the oil level indicator tube into the cylinder block and position the coolant hose bracket and the engine lifting eye in installation position.

1 Screw in the upper bolt/nut.

2 Install the lower bolts.

3 Install the bracket to the air conditioning (A/C) line.

8. Fill with engine oil.

l Refer to Specifications for fill quantity and required type of oil.

9. Note:
When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 miles) or more to relearn the strategy.

Connect the battery ground cable.

10. Check the fluid levels and correct as necessary.

11. Check the routing of the vacuum hoses and wiring and secure them with Cable ties.

incentive in case you were wondering. :p :p

You've got the right idea though...as long as you're removing the exhaust manifold and unbolting the CAT pipes you may as well install a new exhaust. laugh
