I want to upgrade my instrument cluster to one with a tach. I know that all 96+ clusters are electronic and 95s are cable driven. So, if I have a 97 can I just simply plug in the existing wire harnesses into the new cluster with tach and have everything work properly assuming that the new cluster is electronic? I will be getting a cluster out of a 98 Mystique GS which also has the Zetec engine. Let me know if the 98+ clusters will not work in pre-98s and I won't buy it. Thanks for your help!

Not for sure but I think it will work "if" there wasn't a wiring change in the Instrument cluster connecotrs.

A 98 cluster should work... only was a 98+ cluster wouldn't work is if it was out of a SVT I have found the pre98's speed sensor doesn't like the SVT 160MPH speedo. My cluster is out of a 97 zetec Mystique and I have a 96. some of the dummy lights might be different but hey I learned to deal with the over drive off being my check engine light.

So the tach should work fine with my 97 harness. Even if all the dummy lights are not correct, couldn't you just cut and solder the wires to the right connector so the CEL wouldn't come on when you turn your O/D off, etc.? Just a thought. So, the concensus appears to be that I should have no major problem installing a 98 cluster in my 97. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your help. soldering is a little harder than you think on plastic boards... but you could... and I don't have overdrive ![laugh laugh](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/default/laugh.gif) that's only on and ATX SOOO I don't know what would come on with the OD off. you could just do a cut and paste with the plastic lense that has the picture of check engine and ect till they are correct. but is it really worth the time??? to me NO... so no there should be no major issues with installing the cluster.

thanks, it was just a thought. i don't think it would be worth it either. i just want the damn tach to work right, along with the other major guages (speedo, fuel, and temp). other than that, it really doesn't matter. thanks again!

Does the cluster you're looking at have the word 'normal' on the temp guage? Or is it just a red block on one side and a blue block on the other?
