What is there to discuss? It's just used to control emissions.

looking i see i didnt make myself too clear for my own purposes of this discussion.....i am looking at putting a focus engine in my car.........i know there are differences in the vct on the tour and the focus, since i think the focus has it on both intake and exhuast cams.......i am looking for a general discussion of the concept of vct, more than just tour specific......thanks.

The normal Focus doesn't use it at all. The SVT Focus uses it on the intake side (maybe both, I forget) to make power.

Variable cam timing uses a secondary pulley assembly on the exhuast cam pulley(contour engine) to control the timing of the valve opening and duration in order to minimize emmissions, hence the contour zetecs with VCT don't have EGR. The regular ZX3 engines in the focus use an EGR system and don't have VCT. The SVT Focus uses an EGR system and only has VCT on the intake cam. Anything else you wanna know?

So with VCT can you upgrade the cams? I'm toying with the idea (don't have the money) of getting crane cams and the lighter cam pulleys. Can I even upgrade the pulleys without screwing something up that really SEEMS to limit the car? If it controls emissions then it probably doesn't allow something else to work at its best.

As far as swapping engines, I think it is a good idea. There are way more parts to play with.
Go for it but use the SVT Focus motor. Have you seen the specs on that thing?!? Although you might have to swap the tranny too.

Yup, http://www.zx2racing.com/store/cams.htm

You'll throw a CEL though. But you can get a custom chip made to get rid of it.
