Rigging up a low fuel light would be some major work, as there is a new sending unit necessary, wires running up to the cabin, the light, etc.

Like TheContourGuy, I would also like a low fuel light. With my Accord I could tell that I have about 30 miles left as soon as the light came on. As for my 96 Contour, the fuel guage is a piece of crap.

If it is just a resistive sender, it should be fairly easy to wire up a comparator circuit to light up an LED when the fuel level gets really low. Could someone who has expreience taking their dash apart put a meter on the gas sender line? This woudl tell us how low that we can go.

Opps, took me too long to post.

You shouldn't need a new sender. You could just tap the existing line and measure the voltage.

If the fuel guage is as inaccurate as the temp guage that could explain why I can still drive the car even though the needle is pointing at the 'E'

I see where button puncher is coming from though. If you knew how much power was flowing through the lines with, say 50 miles left, build a circuit that will trip the light at that power rating. Could be annoying with fuel splash in the tank though. Would cause the light to flicker. I do know that this little project is out of my electronics knowledge though. eek

Now for the second thing, do the `95 and `96's even have a spot in the guage cluster for a low fuel light? I know I have two fasten belts sockets, though only one works. I also have one that looks like a shock? WTF? A light for when my shocks wear out? That thing would be on all the time!

TheContourGuy,

If you drove your car, till it ran out of gas, just to see the fuel warning light come on,
then you, my friend, have other problems, and they are NOT mechanical or electrical.

Dan , you're not a moron. I use the low fuel light, almost every week. Of course, if the gauge was accurate at all, maybe then i would not need it...

The low fuel light gives me a consistent 40 miles of safe driving. At least I can rely on that...

While my 95 SE doesn't have a light, I think the original docs suggested it did have one. Guess they didn't make it into the early years.

I do something else to figure out when I'm about to run out of gas -- other than look at the needle. Keep a little book in my glove box with every drop of gas or piece of maintenance noted.

Of course, the wife doesn't write everything down - guess it's not important to her until the CEL comes on - and the kids are always looking for paper to write on while in the car - but it helps with problem diagnosis.
