Where can I buy, or find info on how to make, a cam locking tool? I need to do the timing belt, and looks like I need this tool to make life easier. Does this tool work in conjunction with the camshaft pullys? If so, can I get away without removing the valve cover?

Are you comfortable with doing this? I ask only because I though about doing it myself as well but decided to write a check instead. If you do it, please let us know as I chickened out of it myself.

One of the posts from long ago relates to counting the number of belt teeth between self applied timing marks on the various pulleys as a reference. The cam lock tool is supposed to keep the camshafts from moving when removing the belt (always some pressure on one of the cam lobes due to a valve being partway open/closed). Check old forums...

The cam gears/sprockets do not have a key drive, they rely on the clamping force of the bolt.I would not advise changing the belt without removing the cam cover. There is little or no way the cams will stay in the correct position without locking with the flat plate at the trans end of the cams.

Thanks for the replies...and thanks Terry, I was thinking about a device to lock the cam pullys, but since they are not keyed, I guess I wont risk it. Sure glad I asked about this one! I was hoping to avoid having to buy a cam cover gasket, but looks like thats not going to happen. Now if I can only find a piece of steel .2" thick to make the cam locking tool.

www.zx2racing.com/store sells a little tool for about $30, making one yourself would be a whole lot cheaper I'm sure!

I just tore down my zetec. I found a piece of flat stock aluminum to keep the cams statically locked by placing it in the grooves at the other end of the cam. After I marked the pulleys, and removed the belt, the cams would rotate. This does NOT allow you to remove the cam pulleys... need to rig up something different for that. You have to remove the cover so you can reindex the cams, and can double check #1 at TDC by riding a long shanked screwdriver on the #1 piston.

lotus7, in my Haynes manual, it says the pice of metal to lock the cams with should be .2" thick. I am going to see if any of my scrap is that thickness, if not, well of to beg, borrow or steal!

I am going to see if any of my scrap is that thickness, if not, well of to beg, borrow or steal! Putting the flat stock between the grooves at the flywheel end of the cams IS NOT for removing the cam gear bolts. There is a SPECIAL CAM GEAR LOCKING TOOL for that specific purpose. The flat stock is only to keep the cams near TDC, as it won't fit in the grooves if the cams are 180* off. This is to clear up any misunderstandings or bad semantics on my part.
