Recently I have been experiencing pining from my engine despite the fact that it?s not overheating etc. Sometime ago I replaced the timing belt and after I noticed that the engine would not rev out when stationary, however, it does so when driven. It should be noted that prior to changing the belt it would rev out when stationary. In addition, it shows no sign that the valve timing might be incorrectly set as it starts very easily etc. Any opinions, suggestion and views on how I can resolve this problem will be greatly appreciated.

I noticed that immediatlly, high octane 91\93 has significant less pinging and I also get an extra 30mpt (miles per tank) it's just more efficiant.

Thanks for the suggestion folks. However, the highest-octane gas that?s available to us in this part of the world is 90, and we have no way of knowing whether we are actually getting that. Does anyone know if there is a way of retarding the ignition timing.

Drop some Toluene in there to "brew your own" high octane gas. There is a thread currently active about it, and I've been considering doing it myself. It's not as silly as it sounds at first.

did you check your fuel pressure? Just a thought, I had all kinds of pinging problems with my 94 MustangGT a while back low fuel pressure was the culprit!

Engine will not rev very high while not in gear if you have an Automatic Transaxle.

Another thing to check is the MAF wire. It gets crudded up and the computer get a bit confused about how much air is entering the engine. It thinks less is going in because the dirt on the sensor wire acts as an insulator.

First comes mild pinging, then you will see a code P0171 (IIRC) indicating a lean fuel mixture.

I'm sure someone here has posted how to clean the MAF, so use search.

Can't cost much if you DIY, and as long as you don't break anything, it can't hurt.

Cheers,

TB

Just to ask I assumed all modern engines had a knock sensor and would retard the timing before you can hear any pinging?

Only the Duratec has the knock sensor,I'd re check the cam timing.

The official Ford service manual for the 1996 Contour/Mystique seems to make it very clear that both engines are equipped with knock sensors.  It describes the procedure for removing & replacing it, with differences noted for the two engines, and different torque specs for the two engines.

Moonlight Blue 1996 Mercury Mystique GS , Zetec engine, ATX.  No mods. (Well, OK, one mod.  Before I got rid of my previous car, a 1994 Tempo, I swapped radios.  I liked the Tempo's radio better.  That counts as a mod, doesn't it?  I also kept one of my Tempo's wheels to use as a spare.  I hate those stupid ?compact? spares that come with modern cars.  Does this count as a mod?  If so, I guess I have two mods.  Replaced burned/melted blower switch and connector on 19 February 2002 with a 1P3T toggle switch from Marvac and a Molex connector from Rat Shack; I guess this now makes three mods.)
