My car kind of had a problem like that, when I put new plugs and wires on it it really helped the idle, my car is much smother. YOU are to gap the plugs at 50 for a zetec, but I did that, and for two days I fely just like before, so then I gaped them at 46 and ny car idles a lot smother, hope this helps Later Nick

I know this sounds crazy but really check your tensioner pulley. I have seen this on atleast 4 contours zetecs 2.0L. look at the serpintine belt near the bottom while the car is in gear and running if its jumping around you'll need to replace it. Oh by the way be careful and dont get ran over have some one help you. the tensioner pulley housing cracks and causes the belt to jump around make noise and idle bad.. i had this problem on my car.
96 teal contour nothing yet but im saving

Like Nicholas I replaced my wires and plugs and it now runs smoother than never. I don't know if they put cheap stuff on there but I know that the new stuff is good. If you decide to get the wires and plugs changed I strongly suggested you go with good products since they usually have better milleage ratings... Hope this helps. It sure helped for me. BTW, I'm not an expert but I know when my engine runs hard or smooth

Just thought that I would add what I used, Auto Lite Double platuim pro plugs( GAPED AT 46/ NOT AT 50 LIKE THEY RECOMMEND ) Ford MotorSports 9mm wires, and as soon they get off back order the accle coil cap.
Hopes this helps if you have A Zetec

Plugs today don't need to be regapped, matter of fact you're likely to damage them. Checking the gap is really only needed after they've been used and look worn, just to verify their spec...then again, most specs I've seen in books are wrong.
It's more than likely you're serpentine belt or probably the timing belt if you have more than 50K miles.

HTH John Maybe I didnt understand, but are you saying new plugs don't need to be gaped? Because right out of the box my plugs were around 60-63 gap
