What are the downsides to this?

Since the PCM thinks it's cold outside, the engine cooling fan does not come on...or in other words, leave it on when you race or want the power, turn it off when you don't. All the plusses and pitfalls are spelled out in the thread at zx2racing.com.

Am I likely to kill the engine if I try this (using unleaded 95ron) or will it just use a lot more fuel all of the time?

Can't do it all the time, just for when you want it...treat it's use like you would a NOS install.

If not, why doesn't Ford put larger resistances into its meters or advance the ignition further as standard.

Ford programs the pcm to cater to the following 3 priorities... 1. Emissions, 2. NVH and drivability, and 3. power.

Advancing the timing and fattening the fuel curve may affect emissions performance, will cause hard restarts (if you leave the pots on), and require a higher octane fuel all the time. Zetecs love timing advance from a power standpoint They also have a meaner sound at full throttle. I use the pots for track and street racing only... I have a update of the original pot idea regarding a micro switch on the throttle linkage which activates the pots at full throttle only, but I haven't done an install yet.

Hope this helps, Rob

Mark

Thanks,

I had already searched and found the ZX2racing link -which is very useful.

I'll go and hunt out the relevant electronic components from the attic (should have everything) and hopefully get a simple system going by the end of the week.

I do like the throttle resistor idea, nice and neat. I'll have to see if I've got a suitable OpAmp/Comparator lying around.

Keep me updated!

Mark.
