Anyone know how to remove the trim pieces on the dash on both sides of the steering column?
Also how do you remove the trim around the guage cluster- not the dash itself but the black piece around it?

Lastly, how do you remove the shift selector handle on an ATX?

I'm planning on doing some interior mods but the Haynes manual isn't very clear about removing these pieces.

Redhawk,

for the trim on the top dash, remove 2 screws from inside the gauge cluster inside the 2 deep grooves inside that plastic piece, remove 2 other screws from behind the dash clock or the plastic piece that has contour on it , and you will have another screw or 2 behind the defroster switch.

now, the trim pieces on the lower side, fot the left one you will need to remove the lower left panel first above the knees. and under it there will be screws that you will have to remove and then pull that little black piece a bit hard.

for the right one, I don't recall perfectly, but I remember having to pull it hard with care to snap it out of place. just hold it tightly from inside the radio opening and pull, might help to lubricate with some oil before pulling out.. by sparying the edges from inside. just make sure you remove all visible screws. Good luck.

So what are you diing with your tour?

How do you remove that "contour plate" and defroster switch without breaking them?

I am doing some detail work...

Hopefully, if everything turns out, I'll have some pictures for you.

Whatever you do, be it prying or whatever, be CAREFUL! Whenever you whip out a flat blade screwdriver to pry up / snap out the pieces, make sure you don't ding up the plastic. The pieces are pretty soft and it's easy to put unsightly scratches/cuts/grooves/whatever in them. Just take it easy or wrap the screwdriver with a cloth...

As for the Contour nameplate, I can't help you - I've got a 96. The defroster switch is probably in a different place, too.

slowpoke,

If the car is still under warranty, let the dealer fix it.

The only way to remove this, that I have found, is by breaking the wires off the O/D switch. There is a small hex-head screw in the drivers side of the handle. About in the middle. After you remove this the handle can pop up but it is still connected through the O/D wires. Good luck...

Once you remove the handle the Od switch can be sled outward..pulled outward slowly..this way you will have to disconnect or free the wires from inside the gear panel..I know this cause I once gota wood gear handle from a wrecked mystique..
