Talked to my Dad today, car should be done over the next couple of days.

There is a crack in the 'drum' inside the transmission...(drum = torque converter?, dunno)...that crack caused the PCM to boost the fluid pressures, causing hard shifts and the ultimate failure of the tranny. This is the basic story my Dad gave me and he wasn't sure about specifics as he isn't very familiar with FWD auto trannies. This is all coming out to the tune of about $2000! Sweet huh?!

On a side note, this appears to be a fairly common occurance with this model/mileage car as the shop had two other 'tours besides mine with similiar/exact problems and all three cars are within a 2-3,000miles of each other. confused Interesting if you ask me...could this be a design problem Ford doesn't acknowledge?...I think its possible...

So when do you get the car back? $2000?! Damn is that for a brand new one or a used one?

Because its my ordeal and I want all the facts before I go scaring people about it. I want prices, pictures, work orders etc...I need more details before I start seriously getting on Ford for it. Please, to anyone, don't start linking this all over the boards in an effort to build a mob against Ford...not until I/we get some more details. Thanks. I'm going to see about getting all the damaged parts from the shop so I can have pictures and see it all with my own two eyes. laugh

well, the problem being diagnosed is one step closer to getting the car back. that 2k must be a whole lotta labor, huh? did you notice the shifts getting harder before your tranny detonated?
good luck

i work at a tire store. a guy came into work wiht a v6 auto tranny (same as mine). he had 92xxx miles on it. i got into it to drive it in, and i put it in drive. i was like "damn this baby is crisp! esp for 92xxx miles!"
i was talkin to the guy. apparently he replaced his tranny around 52k miles, and he drives it fairly gently!! he said it happened to his friend also, around 62k miles... =O
i hope mines not next at 63k miles... =(

Mike,

HELL YEAH!!! I'll call ya when I get it back. laugh Don't be upset when I win though. wink

All,

My mileage is about 85,xxx IIRC. It has been shifting hard intermitently for a while now. All depends on how you drive the car...oh yeah...DO NOT manually shift these trannies! I know you're not supposed to with Autos but sometimes its handy...well, I'm telling you all...DON'T!!! I'll admit I was fairly rough on the tranny on occasion...mountain driving...but I still think it should have lasted longer than this. laugh
