Talked to my Dad today, car should be done over the next couple of days.
There is a crack in the 'drum' inside the transmission...(drum = torque converter?, dunno)...that crack caused the PCM to boost the fluid pressures, causing hard shifts and the ultimate failure of the tranny. This is the basic story my Dad gave me and he wasn't sure about specifics as he isn't very familiar with FWD auto trannies. This is all coming out to the tune of about $2000! Sweet huh?!
On a side note, this appears to be a fairly common occurance with this model/mileage car as the shop had two other 'tours besides mine with similiar/exact problems and all three cars are within a 2-3,000miles of each other.

Interesting if you ask me...could this be a design problem Ford doesn't acknowledge?...I think its possible...
