I ran over a screw last night on the way to the bar (backing out of the garage) last night. I was going to the dealership today anyway to put the KDW's on for the summer, and got them to patch my Blizzak LM-22.

I was wondering if luke or anyone else knows if the compound they use to patch the tire will hold up to my tire's speed rating. It probably would, since it would be stupid (and lawsuit-prone) to not make a patch that won't hold together over 80mph. But I'd like a little confirmation. laugh

I wouldn't count on expecting the same performance as tire without a patch/plug.
The manufacturers, I believe, make disclaimers about this. Check it out before speeding away!

Can't believe minor damage like a screw hole would really hurt you. Doesn't seem like the casing strength would really be compromised as long as it's a small puncture. Larger holes and damage involving cuts would seem to be more worrisome, since more of the casing fibers would be torn.

Get the work done at good tire shop and you should not have any problems. I had a nail right at the line where the tread stops and the sidewall starts, a bad place I had heard. I talked to the local Tire Rack installer and they said that a patch done right will hold just about anywhere.
It has been 9 mos, no problems.

No. If your tire is damaged (especially close to the sidewall) the tire will most likely not retain its speed rating.

From tirerack.com:

Quote:
While some tire manufacturers "allow" a tire to retain its speed rating if a specified multi-step repair procedure is followed exactly, most tire manufacturers reason that since they have no control over the damage caused by the puncture or the quality of the repair, they can not confirm that the tire has retained its high speed capability. Therefore, their policy is that a punctured and repaired tire no longer retains its speed rating and should be treated as a non-speed rated tire.

That said...I've had two tires (215/45/17) repaired due to nail damage and they have not given me any problems with performance at high speeds. laugh

One thing to note is that neither time did the punctured tires actually go flat, the nail maintained the pressure and I got it fixed asap. Plus they were near the middle of the tread, which is probably the safest place to do a puncture repair.

My tire also held pressure with the nail. It was the passenger rear and I saw the nail while doing yard work. I jacked up the car before I took out the nail and it lost air. I never drove on it flat. That was a blessing!! SZ 50 EP's are about $150 each.

Thanks for the replies, esp the tire rack link; I understand the manufacturers' reasoning, and it makes sense, although I don't think I'll be buying a new tire yet (109 bucks, if I remember right).

The puncture in the tire is at the middle of the tread, so I guess I'll be fine if I just drive a little slower. Doing 80-85 on a winter tire is'nt exactly a genius thing to do anyway. laugh
