I've narrowed down my decision to these(with a little help from the tire rack)..Brigestone Potenza RE950,BFG Comp T/A HR4,BFG Touring T/A,Goodyear Eagle GA.the tires are for a 96SE(Wife's car).the Eagle GA's have been on for 60K and will get another set if the others aren't any better.winter traction is a must(i live in Mich).any help is greatly appreciated. :-)

Forget the Goodyear Eagle GA. Everything I've ever seen about these tires says they're mediocre, even though your mileage has been good.

Look at the new Dunlop SP Sport A2. It's a high performance all-season tire that, according to Tire Rack, ranks a little ahead of the Bridgestone 950. Beware of occasional quality problems on the Bridgestone; read the customer Reviews at Tire Rack for both the 950s and the SP Sport.

Whether either tire has been around long enough to get a good idea of snow performance is another question. Keep watching the Tire Rack customer Reviews if you can, or post Luke, he may have an answer.

Between the Dunlop and Bridgestone, you're bound to find something better than almost anything Goodyear makes.

I have the 950's and have been happy baring the shrapnel I hit in the road that ruined one. Otherwise, the wet traction has been incredible (almost as if the roads were dry) but I bought them this summer so unsure of snow traction. I did not get the 5000's due to the fact there were lower ratings for the tires that have a 60+ sidewall.

Stay away from Goodyear,..they suck. For a great touring tire, you can't go wrong with B-stone, or the BFG's. I have the Potenza 910's, very happy with them-

Seeing as this is your wife's car, I think the touring t/a's would be your best choice. They got me thru many a Michigan winter... on a 5.0 mustang!!!!! They last forever, they are quiet, and offer reasonable handling performance.

You may find the following customer survey page very helpful, as I did:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/index.jsp

Of the tires you mentioned, I did have experience with the Touring T/A's on my 97 SE. I didn't care for them too much, although treadwear was excellent, I found the handling to be lacking. Decent in the rain. Guess it depends on how your wife drives. I'd take a look through the various categories on the above link and see what you find. But for an 1st gen SE, in my opinion, stay away from Touring tires, if I recall, the stock SE tires were considered high-performance all-season, which is a step above the touring category.
