I suspect this method will not work with 99+'s and some 98s. The shift retainer was redesigned several times in MY98, with the final design consisting of the riser integrated with the retainer as one molded composite piece. To remove the reverse lockout you'd have to remove the actual collar and arm that's attached to the shift boot (one cable tie).

You don't necessarily have to remove the reverse lockout [that is, if you just don't like it; like me ]. You can easily disable it with a hose clamp. Remove the shifter boot temporarily (you will need another cable tie to re-install it). Next, take a small hose clamp and open it up all of the way and then put it around the shifter rod and re-insert the end of the hose clamp band into the "screw-housing". Tighten the clamp almost to the point that it is clamped down around the shifter rod. Slide the hose clamp up to the shift knob and pull up and hold up on the reverse lock out collar. With the collar held up in place (with the hose clamp underneath it) tighten the hose clamp around the shifter so that the clamp holds the lock out collar in the up position. The reverse lock out is now disabled. Reattach the shift boot around the lower portion of the collar using a new cable tie. Then re-install the bottom of the shifter boot into the console. All done now! I did this to eliminate the rattling in the shifter (from about 2500-3200 RPM). HTH Mike

Not sure if you drive a stick at all, but if you do, in some cars you will notice that you either have to push the shift knob vertically down or lift it up in order to get the car into reverse. I think it was developed for moron ricers who think they have 6 gears and end up shifting from 5th into reverse and blowing the transmission two states over.

I have 99 SVT and I removed the lockout mechanism from the collar that slides over the metal shift rod.
Remove shift knob. Grasp Boot and pull up, it will pop out. Pull boot off so you can see shifter. You will see a long black piece that slides over shifter. Bottom piece is plastic and is connected to the plastic collar, it is square. Gently open the square plastic piece up and pop it out of the plastic rod.
Reinstall w/out the little square piece and your lockout is disabled.
